At Segment, we believe companies should be able to send their data wherever they want, whenever they want, with no fuss. Unfortunately, most product managers, analysts, and marketers spend too much time searching for the data they need, while engineers are stuck integrating the tools they want to use. Segment standardizes and streamlines data infrastructure with a single platform that collects, unifies, and sends data to hundreds of business tools with the flip of a switch. That way, our customers can focus on building amazing products and personalized messages for their customers, letting us take care of the complexities of processing their customer data reliably at scale. We’re in the running to power the entire customer data ecosystem, and we need the best people to take the market.

In this role, we’re looking for someone to drive the short and long-term direction for our burgeoning Infrastructure group that supports the Segment product engineering teams. This group works on infrastructure platform engineering that includes container orchestration, Kafka, observability (metrics, monitoring, logging), deploys, builds, site reliability, performance engineering, cost optimization and partnering with our Cloud Security and SIRT teams on keeping Segment’s infrastructure safe.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and develop a team of world-class software engineers and site reliability engineers to build the core of Segment’s infrastructure
  • Help grow our Infrastructure group from ~10 to ~27 engineers over the next 12 months, scaling further to 40-50 engineers in 24 months
  • Work with other engineering, product and security leaders to define the strategy for our Infrastructure group
  • Build a Infrastructure function/brand that attracts aspiring infrastructure engineers from all over the world
  • Identify key performance metrics for our infrastructure at a company level and drive those metrics

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience in building and scaling an infrastructure team operating high scale infrastructure in the cloud or on-prem
  • Experience driving career growth for early-in-career, mid-level and senior infrastructure engineers
  • Experience managing engineering teams of 10+ members
  • Experience with hiring skilled, diverse talent from around the world
  • The ability to synthesize all inputs and develop a very crisp infrastructure roadmap
  • A proven track record of operating reliable, scalable, secure, cost-effective infrastructure

We’re especially excited about candidates who:

  • Have extensive experience with developer-first and API-first development
  • Have experience building complex technical products and infrastructure
  • Have extensive experience building cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Have experience building systems and products that run in customer cloud environments
