Satellogic aims to capture every square meter of the Earth's surface to derive insights and enable better decision making for industries, governments, and individuals. Addressing some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, such as providing food or distributing energy for nine billion people without depleting resources, requires real-time planet-scale data. Satellogic has created small, inexpensive satellites, that transmit real-time data and images back home. Our constellation already has several high-resolution satellites in orbit and is growing to 300 in the next few years to provide new insights about our planet.

Optical Engineer

The optical engineer reports to the Optics Leader. In this role you will be responsible for the simulation and analysis of imaging optics hardware like hyper and multispectral camera focal planes, lenses and telescopes. The optical engineer also helps in the assembly and calibration of optical payloads for the satellite

In this role, you will:

  • Perform model, simulation and analysis of lenses, telescopes or filters, and of sensor components for imaging optics in visible light and near infrared (ray tracing, fourier optics, radiometry)
  • Perform or oversee tolerance analysis and manufacturing feasibility studies for new optical payloads
  • Define and develop quality metrics and acceptance criteria for the optical payloads
  • Work with mechanical engineers being responsible for optical alignment, integration and calibration procedures and benches
  • Suggest changes or improvements in optomechanical design to simplify manufacturing processes and improve manufacturing quality
  • Execute optical verification tests and then document and transfer testing procedures to manufacturing
  • Design procedures to guarantee and analyze optical systems performance, like on-orbit experiments or on-earth acceptance procedures
  • Work with product managers in requirements and feasibility analysis of projects involving optical components or processes
  • Define and engineer acceptance criteria, quality metrics and acceptance procedures for external suppliers
  • Work with multiple providers to obtain the best product costing and quality and improve supply chain reliability
  • Work with mechanical engineers in optomechanical design of space optical systems components

What we value

  • MS. or PhD. or equivalent experience in Optics, Physics or Mechanical engineering
  • Experience of 1+ year as engineer in any optical component or process of an imaging optics chain, preferably in alignment and integration of space optics
  • Experience with ray tracing optical design software (Zemax preferred)
  • Experience with mechanical CAD software (Catia preferred)
  • Availability to travel to Uruguay or Europe for one or two weeks with short notice
  • Fluent english speaker and willing to learn working Spanish
  • You can execute and help plan complex engineering projects in a dynamic environment with tight deadlines, reporting progress concisely
