The Memory Solutions Lab (MSL) mission is to develop innovative open system architectures and solutions that transform the performance of semiconductor memory in SSDs, mobile devices and data centers.

The Memory Solutions Lab (MSL) is part of Samsung’s Memory Business Unit, the industry's technology and volume leader in DRAM, NAND Flash, SRAM memory. MSL’s vision is to solve key problems and optimize architecture solutions for Cloud & Data center environments. We are an integral part of Samsung’s strong R&D focus & lab innovation engine. We work closely with development teams to bring feature innovation to product roadmaps.

We are currently looking for a senior engineer to join our team in San Jose, CA to lead industry standards and ecosystem development activities.

The Candidate will be a key technical member of MSL Data Center Device Solutions (DCDS) team.  He or she will join a team of experts in researching and developing innovative data center/ cloud networking, storage, and compute ASIC/ FPGA and system solutions. Primary focus of the candidate would be to represent Samsung at various standards organizations such as PCI-SIG, OCP, NVMe etc to enable industry ecosystem. The ideal candidate must have prior experience developing leading edge networking, storage, and/or embedded computing solutions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research Data Center storage requirements, bottlenecks and pain points, especially related to form-factors, power, and thermal aspects
  • Propose SSD architectures, solutions, and features to address Data Center storage requirements
  • Research next generation storage (SSD) controller architectures, especially host interfaces, high speed IO connectivity technologies
  • Represent Samsung at standards organizations such as PCI-SIG, OCP, SNIA, NVMe TWG and others
  • Provide architectural guidance, for next generation SSD architectures and products
  • Collaborate with Samsung internal teams such as product planning, marketing, and product development to formulate Samsung standards and ecosystem development strategy
  • Work with other hardware/software/firmware architects to develop one-of-a-kind innovative prototypes and contribute to feasibility studies and solution development

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering with 15+ years of experience
  • Solid understanding of high speed IO technologies such as PCIe, Ethernet with link lane rates such as 32 Gbps.
  • In depth understanding of solid state storage technologies and protocols: PCIe, NVMe
  • Strong experience with Standards organizations such as PCI-SIG, SNIA, NVMe TWG
  • Good understanding of system architecture, data center requirements, issues
  • Experience with system architectures and solutions that utilize hardware acceleration (FPGA, ASIC, DSPs, GPUs)
  • Experience with Lab bring-up and debug involving high speed serial links and technology such as PCIe
  • Proven track record of innovation
  • Good understanding of storage technologies and familiarity with SSD Controller architectures
  • Must be highly motivated with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to meet aggressive project deadlines in a team environment
  • Ability to work successfully with cross-functional teams, including coordinating across organizational boundaries and geographies.
  • Ability to create near term value within a strategic research environment.
  • Comfortable working in a multinational environment and understands how to leverage cultural diversity
