About the role:

The team is responsible for working on the embedded software for the Samsara Safety products, which includes in vehicle cameras and sensors that provide AI and algorithmic analysis to recognize and coach unsafe driving situations. The candidate will be working on product firmware working closely with the full stack, machine learning, hardware and other firmware engineers. 

This role can be office-based or fully remote in the US and Canada.

In this role, you will: 

  • Design a network video recorder that interfaces with gstreamer and our custom camera systems to record and retrieve video, meta data, and other associated data streams.
  • Build application logic that drives and works with ML models to identify risks of the road and alert drivers in real time.
  • Diagnose and debug the most memory efficient ways of running multiple services with shared code snippets on a constrained linux device.
  • Design protocols and message passing systems to keep distinct and wired together embedded devices in reliable and constant communication.
  • Debug, analyze and possibly redesign driver architecture to support higher throughput on devices.
  • Lead on complex and open-ended Linux kernel problems (e.g. performance issues).
  • Lead and work closely with senior firmware engineers on large-scale systems upgrade and improvements, including upgrades to the kernel.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Obsess Over the Customer, Build for the Long Term, Growth Mindset) as we scale globally and across new offices .

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • At least 8 years experience working in embedded Linux environments
  • Camera and or video technology experience
  • Experience bringing up linux or embedded devices
  • Thrives in an environment that requires rapid deployment and product iteration based on customer feedback

An ideal candidate also:

  • Is excited about sensors (accelerometer, IR, GPS), protocols (BLE, NFC, CAN), distributed systems, and their application to solve real world problems.
  • Demonstrates significant experience in complex systems bring-up for architectures with multiple processors and peripheral buses.
  • Takes responsibility for implementing low-level and application firmware features as needed by product/feature requirements.
  • Enjoys architecting and managing build and test procedures.
  • Leads and works closely with senior firmware engineers on large-scale systems upgrade and improvements, including upgrades to the kernel.

Regarding COVID-19

Samsara's offices are beginning to reopen for voluntary return. Reopening timelines will be communicated by region based on region-specific guidelines. Phase 3 ('New Normal') will begin no earlier than January 2022. Our primary concern is for the health and well-being of our employees as well as candidates. We have transitioned all interviews and onboarding to be conducted virtually via Zoom video conferencing. Employees are able to work from countries and states where Samsara is a registered entity through December 2021. All employees are expected to return to our offices when they reopen with the exception of field-based and fully remote roles.
