We have a great opportunity for a freelance Production Editor to join our pool of trusted freelancers. Freelance Production Editors work across a variety of guidebook and other product types, on projects ranging from 4 to 12 weeks in duration. Fees are dependent upon experience.

What You’ll Do:
Production Editor (PE) is primarily a layout and editorial project management role. The PE coordinates the entire layout process for guidebooks and other products, laying out the book in InDesign and liaising with cartographers, book designers (photo editors) and other team members as necessary. The role also requires sound editorial judgement on issues such as avoiding defamation, cultural sensitivity, implementing house style and design requirements, and ensuring consistency, to deliver high-quality travel titles adhering to Lonely Planet’s publishing standards, on deadline and to budget.
What We’re Looking For:
Essential
● Degree or postgraduate qualification in relevant area (publishing and editing or journalism preferred), or equivalent work experience
● Strong desktop publishing skills (preferably InDesign)
● Excellent project-management skills, including the ability to work to tight deadlines, and to quickly assess and prioritise project tasks and workloads
● Excellent attention to detail, and the ability to closely follow production and design manuals
● Strong editing skills, with previous experience in book editing or journalism preferred
● Media law knowledge, including ability to spot potential defamation or copyright infringement
● Proven ability to work with standard editorial conventions
● Proven ability to work with content management systems
● Well-developed communication and negotiation skills, including providing clear, concise instructions via email
● Proven ability to work with electronic-file-management and naming conventions
● Sound knowledge of spelling, grammar and punctuation
● Good general knowledge and a love of travel
● Ability to adapt to new technology, processes and change
Desirable
● Publishing, journalism or book industry experience
● Awareness of Lonely Planet products and series
● Experience using project-management tools such as Excel for task tracking and scheduling
● Experience working with maps (accuracy and quality checks)
● Experience selecting or reviewing images for publication, and writing image captions
● Knowledge of travel industry issues, such as accessible/sustainable travel and cultural sensitivity
