Role Summary
8-month co-op from Jan-Aug 2023 in materials engineering with a focus in battery cell prototype and design
Responsibilities
- Work with product integration teams to come up with novel tests and prototyping methods for realizing concept designs into state-of-art cell designs and future battery packs.
- Develop test methods and success criteria to de-risk Rivian's future cell designs.
- Be creative, result-oriented and open-minded in coming up with test plans for component or coupon level, sub-system level or generate a test-vehicle to verify or understand design capabilities
- Work with mechanical modeling & design team to prioritize key prototyping activities and related test-plan
- Work with cross-functional teams to execute on test-plan. This may require working with internal or external teams to design and implement appropriate test jigs, fixtures
- Collect and compile test data to effectively summarize and communicate findings with technical and non-technical teams. Take data driven approach to provide feedback to design and process teams for design improvements.
- Perform industry benchmarking analysis and run necessary mechanical & Echem characterization to understand state-of-art technology
- Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the position.
Qualifications
- Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters, or PhD degree at an accredited university
- Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. MS/PhD preferred
- Hands-on experience in product prototyping- Li-ion batteries prototyping and testing is preferred
- Familiarity with CAD, hands-on 3D printing experience, basic machining, and custom fixture design is desirable
- Experience with mechanical and/or electrochemical testing methods for material or product characterization
- Experience with performing tests on one or more of lab equipments such as Instron, DMA is desired
- Detail oriented with strong data-driven problem solving approach Ability to work safely in wet lab environment
- Ability to work independently with little guidance
- Quick learner, able to focus and prioritize tasks to make progress in rapidly changing environments
- Passion for learning and 1st principle problem solving
Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law.
Rivian provides robust wellness benefits, and a medical insurance package for interns, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
