THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Evaluate and select anode materials that meet Rivian’s requirements.
- Develop advanced characterization techniques to assess properties and performance of different anodes including graphite, SiOx, Si, and composites.
- Work with cross functional teams internally and externally to bring new anode technology to cell production.
- Investigate surface and bulk structure of anodes and their correlation with performance and lifetime.
- Source/evaluate new anode materials.
- Define anode development roadmap for Rivian’s cell technology.
- Be an expert in technical discussions and lead collaborations with external research laboratories.
- Train engineers and technicians.
THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science with more than 7 years working on lithium-ion batteries in a combination of academia and industry
- Demonstrated experience with anode development and characterization.
- Strong understanding of anode and cell manufacturing process.
- Strong understanding of the chemistry of state-of-the-art and emerging anode materials, their degradation mechanisms, and compatibilities with electrolyte.
- Strong knowledge of processes to improve anode performance and cycle/calendar life.
- Experience/knowledge on surface analysis and modification. Hands on experience with material synthesis and/or coating.
- Understanding of electrochemical techniques such as charge-discharge cycling, CV, EIS, GITT, PITT…
- Hands on experience with material characterization such as SEM, XRD, XPS, Raman, FTIR, BET, TGA/DSC…
- Hands on experience with industry standard electrode processing steps including slurry mixing, coating, calendaring, and drying.
- Experience with building coin and pouch cells.
- Experience working in a glovebox and/or dry room environment, handling air-sensitive materials.
- Critical problem-solving skills: ability to ask the right people, the right questions at the right time in the right way
- Detail oriented: ability to become a subject matter expert to make informed decisions
- Curiosity: demonstrate level of interest that enables inventiveness
- Execution: demonstrate that follow through is given as much attention as problem solving
- Structured: able to organize chaos thru methodical framework and documentation to achieve goals harmoniously
