Role Summary
In this position you will work as an experienced laboratory leader who knows how to keep a lab safe, efficient, clean, stocked, and productive. You are comfortable working with a wide variety of stakeholders including executive leadership, lab technicians, vendors, scientists, maintenance crew, and more. You are familiar with typical budgetary planning processes as well as executing against a budget. You are familiar with a wide variety of laboratory disciplines, including chemical, mechanical, and electrical laboratory equipment. You are familiar with the typical CAPEX planning and execution process. You are passionate about establishing a culture of safety in the lab.
Responsibilities

Safety – Work with Environmental Health and Safety at Rivian (EHS) to establish proper safety practices in lab and ensure they are followed. Define Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for typical laboratory tasks and train work with EHS to train technical team on their use. Monitor labs for hazards, particularly of electrical or mechanical nature

Cleanliness and order – Work with leadership to define owners for specific laboratory areas. Define expectations for cleanliness and order. Ensure that protocols are being followed and report out to leadership

Ensure Materials are Available – Work with engineers to define frequently used equipment and materials. Ensure that commonly used materials are in stock. Place orders proactively as needed. Communicate frequently with engineers to anticipate needs.

Ensure equipment is maintained in proper operating condition

Calibration – Develop and maintain calibration schedule. Work with engineers and/or external calibration companies to execute calibration without incurring excessive downtime to equipment.

Preventative Maintentance – Determine necessary preventative maintenance for equipment. Identify high-wear components and develop proposal for any spare parts that should be maintained on hand. Work with external vendors as well as engineers to ensure equipment is maintained in working order. For high-use equipment such as cyclers, track and report uptime.

Equipment Repair – Coordinate equipment repair with vendors or other companies for quick repair to minimize downtime. Maintain relationships with equipment vendors.

Oversee lab OPEX budgets and execute CAPEX plans

OPEX Spending – Work with leadership to establish lab budgets for small tools and consumable materials, as well as maintenance and calibration. Manage budget.

CAPEX Execution – Work with leadership to take ownership of capital expenditure plans. Collaborate with facilities, EHS, and engineering requestors to ensure that CAPEX submissions are complete, including review to ensure they can be successfully installed into the facility and operated. Ensure CAPEX plans are approved on a timely basis, working with engineering leadership, purchasing, and other Rivian stakeholders. Work with vendors to ensure projects are delivered on time
Qualifications

7+ years of work experience in a laboratory environment.

3+ years managing a laboratory

Demonstrated experience managing financial aspects (CAPEX and OPEX) of a laboratory

Safety training and experience required
