Remora is seeking a highly technical and seasoned professional for the position of Director of Mechanical Engineering to join our team. In this hands-on role, you will lead and mentor a talented team to steer the development of our advanced technology carbon capture system. You will also act as an individual contributor developing the mechanical system from research through technology demonstration to operational system design, serving as a key figure within the Engineering team.

We’re a 50-person climate tech startup based in Detroit, MI. We're building a device that captures a semi-truck’s carbon emissions directly from the tailpipe. We'll sell the CO2 to end-users, and share that revenue with our customers, so our device will create a new revenue stream while reducing their emissions.

We've signed up some of the largest companies in the world to pilot our technology, including iconic multibillion-dollar brands, top trucking companies, and some of the most recognizable Fortune 100 companies. We’ve raised multiple rounds of funding from top investors like Lowercarbon Capital, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, and Valor Equity Partners.


  • Execute: Lead Mechanical Engineering team through highly complex and technical component and system design projects in an R&D environment.
  • Grow: Serve as a “hands-on” mentor to the entire Engineering team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages creativity and professional development among team members.
  • Collaborate: Collaborate and communicate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of electro-mechanical systems with other disciplines.
  • Design: Ensure the application of best practices and state-of-the-art technologies in mechanical engineering research and development, design, analysis/simulation, and testing.
  • Plan & Develop: Define requirements, oversee the development of critical components, conduct design reviews, source key elements, and orchestrate rigorous systems testing. Optimize efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources by:
    • Defining objectives for the department and team members, conduct regular individual meetings, develop personalized growth plans, and conduct performance evaluations.
    • Identifying and procure additional resources (e.g., software tools, equipment, consultants, staff) to enhance team effectiveness.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field/experience.
  • Experience in research, design, and development of complex fluid/gas electro-mechanical system design.
  • Sizing of compression/vacuum pumps, control valves, heat exchangers, ASME pressure vessels, flowmeters, piping, press/temp/RH/gas sensors, etc.
  • Large modular process skid design experience.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, SAE, MIL-Spec, or other industry standards.
  • Familiarity with applying regulatory standards
  • 15+ years of relevant work experience
  • 7+ years of leading an Engineering Team through complex hardware design and development projects

Preferred Requirements:

  • Gas separation system design experience, including PSA, VSA, and cycle process design
  • Experience filtering particles and water from gas streams.
  • Large industrial engine experience
  • Experience in water separation from gas streams
  • Experience in gas compression, storage, and refrigeration 
  • Familiarity with FEA, CFD, and other CAE tools
