Scanning Electron Microscopist
We are seeking an experienced Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Expert to join our team, specializing in the characterization of cathode active materials and failure analysis. In this role, you will play a crucial part in analyzing the microstructure, morphology, and elemental composition of battery materials, supporting both R&D and production efforts. Your expertise in SEM analysis, EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), and advanced imaging techniques will help diagnose material failures, optimize manufacturing processes, and contribute to the development of next-generation battery technologies.
Responsibilities will include:
- Carry out and optimize sample preparation (mounting, polishing, etching) for optical and electron microscopy, using mechanical, electropolishing or ion beam methods.
- Characterize samples with optical and electron microscopy
- Measure surface roughness and topography with stylus and optical profilometers
- Ensure proper documentation and upkeep of technical data, laboratory procedures, and materials
- Manage and prioritize laboratory activities for maximum efficiency, and able shift priority of work quickly based on projects
- Synthesize data and report findings to team of scientists
- Clearly document procedures and protocols.
- Maintain lab equipment as well as lab order and cleanliness with safety in mind.
- Problem solving and troubleshooting on instruments when needed
- Expanding potential instrument capabilities and introduce new technologies related to electron microscopy.
- Overseeing the sample process and optimized process to improving methodology.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, or comparable degree and experience.
- Candidate should have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a materials characterization lab with demonstrated expertise in scanning electron microscopy.
- Detail oriented, excels at performing repetitive tasks where both high degrees of accuracy and precision are required.
- Able to work both independently and in a collaborative project-focused environment, prompt and dependable.
- Manage multiple tasks and projects in parallel.
- Comfortable working with chemicals and vacuum equipment in a laboratory environment.
- Be both capable and willing to perform all the various manual tasks involved with lab work, such as safely moving heavy objects, handling incoming materials, etc.
- The ability to analyze data and effectively communicate results
- Strong ability to follow detailed technical instructions and operating procedures
- Experience troubleshooting experiments
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with scanning electron microscope alignment and routine maintenance, including associated systems (EDS, EBSD).
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work hands on the lab, including standing and operating equipment at a lab bench.
- Able to work in a laboratory environment for extended periods
- Able to lift 30lbs
Working Conditions:
- Environment: office, wet laboratory, chemical plant, outdoor test sites.
- Exposures encountered: hazardous materials, electrical hazards.
- Essential physical requirements: working hands-on in a research lab setting.
- Travel required as needed, less than 10%.
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
