INDUSTRIAL PhD POSITION IN COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS @ RECORDED FUTURE
Recorded Future is happy to announce a new Industrial PhD Student position in computational linguistics. The position is tied to the research project ‘Interpreting and Grounding Pre-trained Representations for Natural Language Processing’. The project is a collaboration between Linköping University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Recorded Future AB, and is a part of the WASP Graduate School.
Building computers that understand human language is one of the central goals in artificial intelligence, and also a core part of how Recorded Future is building a system that constructs a digital twin of the world by automatically analyzing text in multiple languages.
A recent breakthrough on the way towards this goal is the development of neural models that learn deep contextualized representations of language. However, while these models have substantially advanced the state of the art in natural language processing (NLP) for a wide range of tasks, our understanding of the learned representations and our repertoire of techniques for integrating them with other knowledge representations and reasoning facilities remain severely limited. To address these gaps, this project will develop new methods for the interpretation, grounding, and integration of deep contextualized representations of language.
This position is as an employee of Recorded Future, where we expect you to devote 80% of your time to your PhD studies, and 20% to working with project within the company’s R&D organization. Your PhD project will be aligned with the projects you work with within the company.
You must have qualifications in computer science with a strong background in mathematics and a clear profile in natural language processing in the form of relevant courses and/or a Master’s thesis, or have an equivalent level of knowledge. You should also have an interest in seeing your research results put to use in practical, industrial applications.
You must have documented ability to take advantage of and build upon research in the area of natural language processing, as well as the ability to personally define, motivate, and plan research projects. You can document these abilities by e.g. your Master’s thesis or publications in scientific journals or conferences. As an additional documentation, you must enclose with the application a personally written plan for a potential first paper for a doctoral thesis.
To qualify, you must also fulfill the general eligibility requirement for admission to third-cycle studies at a Swedish university. This requires a completed Master’s degree, or completion of course requirements of at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS are at Master level, or an equivalent level of knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. Admission to PhD studies in the research area of Computer Science requires either a Master’s degree in the field of the research area, or completion of courses of at least 60 ECTS in the field of the research area, including a project of at least 15 ECTS. Out of these 60 ECTS, at least 30 ECTS must be at the Master’s level.
You will be enrolled in the PhD student program at Chalmers University of Technology or Linköping University.
You are expected to start your position sometime between September 1st and December 31st, 2020.
WASP Graduate School
The WASP Graduate School is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software.
The curriculum provides the foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by experienced researchers in the field. The graduate school is organized as one common school divided into two tracks – one that focuses on AI and one that focuses on autonomous systems and software.
The WASP graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and industry.
This is done through a program with specifically designed courses, international research visits, study visits at Swedish industry partners, cooperation with several partner universities in and outside Sweden, and visiting lecturers. There are also recurrent chances for our PhD students to network with industrial and academic representatives in the many events arranged by WASP.
The graduate school provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieve international research excellence with industrial relevance.
