About Pursuit

Our mission is to create economic transformation. By training low-income adults to launch and advance careers as software engineers, we help our Fellows go from earning $18,000 to over $90,000 starting salary on average, adding an estimated $2M in lifetime earnings. Pursuit partners with leading companies like Blackstone, USV, Citi, Peloton, and Uber to employ Fellows in career-defining engineering roles and supports them with on-the-job training to ensure potential translates to performance. Since 2013, Pursuit has created ~$1B in total lifetime wage gains, creating lasting economic mobility that spans generations.

Pursuit’s proven solution is built on two interconnected components: training (which includes community development, Core pre-job training, and Commit on-the-job training) and a financial product (known as Bond). However, growing training alone will not meet the magnitude of need nor solve new societal challenges ahead. The typical expectation is to expand our training to other cities, but this will not come anywhere close to creating good jobs for millions of low-income Americans. Instead, our strategy for scaled impact is to evolve our financial product and create tools for other organizations, jobs, and places. We believe that this will not only create good jobs for millions of low-income Americans but will also generate a new trillion-dollar market directly tied to results in the long term.

We are One Big Team

The passionate and collaborative team at Pursuit gives its all to achieve our mission. And it’s not just staff. We work with employer partners that love hiring our Fellows because they are so well prepared, ranging from big financial firms to scrappy startups, and everything in between. We also activate and engage hundreds of volunteers that come from all areas of the tech industry. These experts and professionals help keep our curriculum fresh and our standards for achievement high by participating in our admissions process, as well as program-specific activities such as interview training, DemoDays, Hackathons, and Capstone projects.

As the Technical Coach (Instructor), you’ll share your vast software engineering knowledge and deliver technical instruction to a class of adult learners. You’ll teach Fellows the necessary coding skills for their future as software engineers and foster a broad understanding of the practical applications of technology. Most importantly, you’ll instill confidence and re-enforce the persistence they will need to embark on this new career path.

As a Technical Coach you will:

  • Share your knowledge and love of technology with a class of adult learners by leading technical instruction via lectures, activity-based learning workshops, code reviews, and projects.
  • Work with our existing robust curriculum and contribute to additional course content by providing feedback, ideas, improvements, activities, and additional assets.
  • Create a positive and professional learning environment, fostering a community that goes beyond the classroom.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the larger program team to track cohort progress through our technical curriculum.
  • Empower Fellows to learn how to create websites and software, leveraging different technologies and coding languages, and instilling a love of learning new tech stacks, which they will need to continue doing in their careers.
  • Partner with staff to leverage our vast network of volunteers from top tech companies in the NY Metro area to enhance learning and participate in instructional activities in the classroom.

What you need to be considered for the Technical Coach role:

  • 4+ years experience as a software developer
  • Solid technical skills in front- and back-end technologies, preferably Javascript, Node.js, React and Postgres
  • Understanding of algorithmic concepts and patterns such as BFS, DFS, two pointers, sliding window, time/space complexity and you can coach Fellows to be successful in technical interviews.
  • A deep-rooted and sincere passion for technology, with a desire to help diversify engineering teams and provide further accessibility to tech-oriented careers
  • Collaborative, able to gain buy-in and influence
  • Ability to coach and mentor with empathy, while holding Fellows accountable for their development
  • High EQ, with a demonstrated ability to build professional relationships with colleagues across all levels
  • Experience applying a data-driven approach to projects and programs to measure effectiveness, spot trends and adjust plans to meet outcomes
  • Experience teaching adult learners or coaching/mentoring junior engineers is a plus, but not required
  • Excitement for Pursuit’s mission and business model, and a belief in the potential of anyone to learn to code and become leaders in tech
