Episode is a mobile storytelling network and platform created by Pocket Gems. Episode aims to define storytelling for the 2+ billion people on mobile with animated, interactive stories that are part TV, novel, movie, and mobile game. Since launching in 2014, users have viewed over 3 billion episodes (equivalent of ~57,000 years) across 60,000+ stories. Over 6 million storytellers have signed up to create their own stories, including award-winning screenwriters and published novelists. Episode also partners with major studios and industry stars to create stories such as Mean Girls: Senior Year, Demi Lovato: Path to Fame, and Pretty Little Liars.

The Strategic Finance team is a critical leader and thought partner to all business units throughout Pocket Gems.  We perform analyses to support strategic direction, drive operational improvements by guiding investment decisions, and lead financial forecasting and long term planning.

In this role, you will be responsible for contributing insight into our financial performance, making recommendations on and assisting with strategic and operational initiatives, and building scalable tools and systems.  To succeed in this role, you must be a well-rounded top performer with superb data analysis and communication skills, the ability to work independently, and the drive to complete projects in a high-intensity growth environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop financial models that guide strategic and tactical decision-making on revenue drivers, new R&D initiatives, and user acquisition by assessing financial return and ROI

  • Assist the Episode studio in managing revenues and costs by assessing their informational needs and developing processes and tools to systematically address them

  • Become a trusted thought partner to game teams through data driven and in-depth financial analyses

  • Collaborate with internal functional teams to understand KPI trends and forecast the impact of new product initiatives, new user intake, and market trends

  • Support the continuous development of the Company’s multi-year operating plan, including translation of high-level strategic goals into financial projections supported by market data

  • Facilitate ad hoc and cross-functional strategic and operational projects


  • Bachelor’s degree and over 2 years of experience in financial and data analysis, preferably through a top-tier investment bank, consulting firm, or corporate/operational finance group

  • Expert financial modeling (Excel) and strong SQL and scenario analysis skills.  Engineering and science backgrounds are welcome

  • Exceptional quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to consider the impact of strategic business decisions

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-functionally

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex issues into structured frameworks and concrete action plans

  • Positive attitude to “do what it takes” to get the job done in a dynamic, startup environment with a commitment to challenging the status-quo to drive improvements for the Company

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to multi-task and shift priorities quickly, while delivering under limited supervision
