Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains. We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Our customers come from a range of sectors, including commercial, environmental and humanitarian. We launched our first product line, Planet Analytics Feeds earlier this year and rapidly scaling our capabilities across verticals and industries.

We have an industry leading web geospatial engineering team distributed across SF and Berlin, obsessed with finding systematic solutions to hard problems and inventing the future of how people interact with geospatial imagery. We are looking for a hands on senior technical engineering lead with applied product experience to join us.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Leading the design and development of full stack geospatial web services running actions and transformations on Planet’s imagery
  • Understand the data needs including schema, frequency of the data (either streaming, daily, hourly etc) by collaborating closely with machine learning engineers and data scientists
  • Collaborate closely with product managers and solution engineers to define granularity of engineering deliverables to product roadmap
  • Providing technical leadership to a collaborative team of full-stack software developers and data engineers
  • Facilitate and make technical decisions that drive the long term vision and architecture of data engineering within the Planet platform
  • Collaborate closely with peers on other engineering teams and interface frequently with product and design teams

What You Bring:

  • 5+ years experience developing and shipping data software in a production context at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to develop scalable data pipelines and infrastructure
  • Solid understanding of and experience developing and working with web-based APIs
  • Strong, industry leading understanding of software architecture and testing patterns
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a software development team that uses version control, code reviews and regular deployments.
