About The Role

We’re looking for a world-class people manager to lead our platform team in helping our engineering org move faster and faster every day and ensuring our products can reach enterprise scale.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure developers for our products and services have the rails and tools they need to keep systems reliable, performant, and cost-effective
    • Handle outages, post-mortem, and remediation practices to prevent issues from reoccurring
    • Bootstrap and drive an SRE mindset - developing rails for the team and the broader engineering organization to build and deliver reliable products 
    • Develop availability and downtime (SLOs and SLIs) for our products
    • Drive the architecture and validation of the resilience of our systems
    • Using past experience in a variety of SDLC approaches to drive improvements as necessary to keep up with growth
    • Managing the foundational elements of our live environment, including AWS accounts, networks, and service organization
    • Supporting security stakeholders in continuously improving our security posture
  • Drive the technical strategy of our data and application infrastructure to support distributed computing problems and serve terabyte-scale data to our customers
    • Collaborate with lead engineers and product managers to accelerate our ability to develop and experiment with new data platforms and applications so we can explore big bets
    • Align business objectives to team objectives to ensure each team member is delivering impactful work
    • Experience prioritizing team’s roadmap across competing stakeholder requirements and resources
  • Be hands-on coding when needed within the team, provide technical feedback on code reviews
  • Manage and drive the performance of our Platform team
    • Manage a team of 4 platform and backend engineers
    • Help lead the recruiting, hiring, and onboarding process to build out our platform team
    • Work closely with your direct reports to communicate goals and expectations, while delivering constructive feedback
    • Push and encourage your team to achieve their best output and set the pace in achieving our technical vision
  • Be a key contributor as part of the engineering leadership team
    • In defining and driving engineering initiatives, cultural growth, or architectural changes across the product and engineering teams
    • Translating company and team objectives into a roadmap for the team. Able to develop and maintain roadmap for the team with a 1-2 year vision
    • Be able to identify areas of inefficient spend and lead initiatives working with engineering teams to identify areas of excess spend or opportunities
    • Being able to consult with engineering teams to help estimate and forecast on architectural or application additions and changes
    • Be a bridge between finance and engineering to understand and manage infrastructure spend

Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years of experience managing platform/infrastructure/site reliability teams 

Technical Expertise

  • 5+ years experience as a software developer, software, platform, or cloud infrastructure engineer or similar
  • Strong experience with our core technologies (AWS, ElasticSearch, Spark (or similar scaled data processing technologies), and Python)
  • Clear experience with Infrastructure-as-code frameworks (e.g. Pulumi, terraform, cloud formation or similar) (IaC)
  • Strong understanding of agile engineering practices
  • Strong system design and architecture skills
  • Experience managing hybrid environment between DC and AWS; experience managing bare metal / colo infrastructure
  • Experience deploying and maintaining self-managed Redis, ElasticSearch, Postgres, in both data center and cloud.

Leadership Expertise

  • Experience translating company objectives into a roadmap for the team.
  • Experience translating technical design documents into projects, milestones, and backlogs.
  • Experience with billing, budgeting and budget forecasting for cloud and data center infrastructure

Managerial Expertise

  • Experience managing teams delivering products, managing stakeholders, prioritization, and timelines
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineers
  • Experience hiring and recruiting
  • Experience managing individual and team performance
  • Experience running agile sprints, kanban / backlog grooming (or similar)
