Engineering Manager
About Paytient:
We’re on a mission to help people better access and afford care.
Every day, millions of people, and their loved ones, need to see a doctor. For most of us, that moment is an uncertain one - we’re unsure of what’s wrong, who to go to, how long it’ll take to be seen, when we’ll feel better, and what it’ll cost.
Paytient partners with thoughtful employers and health plans who understand the impact of that moment and want to ensure that every one of their plan members are easily able to access and afford care. Our clients understand that an improved ability to self-pay for care changes patient behavior and creates value for the health plan. This founding belief is becoming an emerging standard of care in health plan design and is now, in fact, a mandatory capability in some governmental health plans. Founded in 2018, Paytient is now part of nearly 6,000 employer health plans and providing certainty that people are better able to access and afford care.
About The Role:
We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of five engineers and take ownership of two key products that help millions of people access the care they need. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you’ll be responsible for not just delivering software, but also building a strong, high-performing team, and improving the processes that drive efficiency and innovation.
You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and Business teams to align technical efforts with company goals while keeping communication clear and transparent. Your leadership will ensure reliability, security, and scalability as you guide the team toward continuous improvement. Success in this role means delivering high-quality software while fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and impact.

What You'll Do:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of five+ engineers, fostering career growth and creating opportunities for advancement.
- Take ownership of the team’s growth, technical execution, and development processes to ensure efficient, scalable, and high-quality output.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of two critical products, balancing technical and business priorities.
- Partner with Product, Design, and Business teams to define product requirements, priorities, and technical trade-offs.
- Collaborate with senior and staff engineers to guide technical decisions and ensure alignment with broader engineering goals.
- Ensure system reliability, security, and scalability by driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.
- Recruit and onboard new team members, fostering a strong culture of collaboration and innovation.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to help shape the team’s future direction.
What You'll Bring:
- At least six years of total software development experience, including at least two years in a people management role.
- Experience delivering software in a cross-functional team using modern software delivery processes and tools.
- Strong technical foundation with experience in one or more of the following: React, Java Spring Boot, AWS, and Terraform. While expertise in all is not required, familiarity with most is preferred.
- A bias for action and a proven track record of leadership in fast-paced environments.
- Ability to assess technical and business trade-offs and communicate them effectively to stakeholders.
- Experience working in a growth-oriented startup environment is a plus.
- Experience in healthcare, HRIS, payroll, or benefits administration is a plus.
- A low-ego, humble, and mission-driven mindset, with a passion for building products that make a meaningful impact.
