Why We Need You

We're looking for a General Manager & Engineering Site Lead to take on the challenge of establishing PagerDuty’s expansion to Lisbon, Portugal. The successful candidate will be responsible for hiring, inspiring, growing, and retaining the best and brightest talent in the region. 

In this role, we value collaboration heavily; you’ll be part of our Global Engineering leadership team and work closely with other group leaders in Engineering organization - currently all in North America.  In our roles in Engineering, we are true partners with Product Management to help construct ambitious roadmaps.  You will be responsible for building the local engineering team in collaboration with your talent acquisition partners. You will execute on large-scale projects, participate in important decisions, and help set the standards & processes that drive all of Engineering.  You’ll also work cross-functionally with Product Management, Legal, and our customers to support other parts of the business on important company initiatives.  We build a product for Engineers - our input is both valued and needed in departments outside of Engineering!

As the senior leader of the Lisbon location, you will be the key pillar in our new office and the cultural ambassador for PagerDuty in your region.  While this office will start with Engineering, we anticipate having other job functions grow there over time.  You must lead by example, and live the PagerDuty cultural values in your day to day actions.  Culture and people are what make PagerDuty an incredible company and place to work, and you will be the integral factor to making this a success in our new location.  A large part of your time will be spent in rapidly recruiting the best Engineering talent and helping integrate the new team members into the PagerDuty culture.  We anticipate approximately 25% of your time will be focused on the success of the expansion to Lisbon including ongoing communication with key cross-functional leaders globally regarding overall status of the region.  You will have support from an Office Manager who will be responsible for general office duties and handling specific questions and issues for local employees, vendors, customers, etc. 

This position will report directly to the VP of Engineering with a matrix relationship to the SVP, Engineering and will have company-wide exposure and visibility.

Responsibilities

  • You will be one of the first hires for the new office in Lisbon and initially as we grow and expand the office, you will be the main representative of PagerDuty.  You’ll be a big part of helping build the PagerDuty “brand” in the local market in order to attract the best talent.
  • Help recruit, lead and inspire teams of engineers working on agile, cross-functional teams to deliver great software
  • Interact with internal engineering teams to resolve dependencies
  • Make pragmatic trade-off decisions on resourcing and priority
  • Work with the rest of Engineering and Product leadership at PagerDuty on cross-team initiatives, both cultural and technical
  • Work cross-functionally with other departments in the Lisbon office to offer support and leadership where needed.
  • Understand local laws and customs and understand how we can best work within them while still achieving our goals. 

Skills and Experience

  • 8+ years of software development experience
  • 5+ years of people management experience leading technical teams
  • Ability to operate at both a tactical and a strategic level 
  • Proven experience in coaching, mentoring, influencing, and inspiring Engineering leaders on both technical and management tracks.
  • Proven success in collaborating and influencing multiple functions and groups to achieve desired goals.
  • Ability to hire well AND quickly, including by utilizing your personal network.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Ability to host meetings for large groups of people and an ability to inspire by setting vision and direction
  • Able to both collaborate with and negotiate with peers inside and outside of Engineering
  • A passion for building collaborative, inclusive engineering teams
  • Deeply networked in the region and have the industry contacts in hiring/recruitment firms
  • Strong delivery mindset and ability to use product and engineering metrics to drive decision making
  • Previous experience working in a SaaS company with a deep understanding of Agile software development practices is preferred.  
  • Strong business acumen, and comfortable interacting with regional customers directly when needed
  • Previous experience in being a “Site Lead” and setting up an Engineering office in a new region for a multinational company is preferred
  • A genuine interest and willingness to learn PagerDuty’s culture and values and be a strong proponent for them.
