👩‍💻 The Role


Location: While this position is posted in a specific location, all of Oyster’s positions are fully remote, and you can work from home. Forever. To create the best experience for our new hire (you?!), this role requires that you be based within -3/-6 UTC.

What you'll do…

Oyster is looking for a Commercial Counsel to contribute to Oyster's growth to become the world leader in global distributed working. Reporting to the Managing Counsel, your responsibilities will include, but will  not limited to the following:

  • Providing advice and counsel to support Sales, Finance, and other internal teams regarding commercial contracts and a variety of legal issues;
  • Reviewing contracts to ensure compliance with Oyster policies;
  • Leading our third-party contracting management function;
  • Supporting product development with regulatory and compliance advice and counsel supporting new product initiatives;
  • Assisting team and department management with workload capacity planning and participation in project teams to accomplish projects contributing to Oyster’s success;
  • Supporting contract automation initiatives to reduce legal touches on commercial opportunities;
  • Supporting knowledge management initiatives through creating and updating various playbooks so business partners can self-serve answers autonomously and;
  • Conducting training and being comfortable presenting to further Legal’s role in being a transparent, accessible business partner to the company.

The role requires you to bring a balanced, practical, and commercial lens to everything you do. You will need to be flexible,  think on your feet and outside the box. We are looking for someone who is a robust communicator and willing to work as a true collaborator with a team focused on succeeding together to deliver a common goal.

What we're looking for...

  • Juris Doctorate or other qualified lawyer with at least 5 years experience as a fully licensed or qualified practicing attorney in your country of residence.
  • 5+ years post-qualification legal experience working in a reputable commercial law firm, in-house legal department (or a combination of both).
  • Experience in corporate advisory and in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
  • Experience advising companies on regulatory risk and analyzing multi-jurisdictional issues. You will have the ability to deliver applicable, concise advice so business partners understand risk and can make informed risk-based decisions.
  • Capable of explaining complex legal theory, terminology, and issues in easy-to-understand, cross-cultural language in a customer-facing manner.
  • An affinity for and experience in tackling and solving difficult and varied legal issues creatively.
  • A desire to help a growing company build new systems and processes in response to market evolution.
  • Exemplary analytical, communication, and research skills.
  • Proficient in Google Suite of products (Gmail, Google Doc, Google Sheets).
  • Positive, independent, initiative-taking attitude and ability to work in a dynamic, high-output, team-oriented, practical environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn new things, work on various issues, and adapt to dynamic environments.
  • You will be courteous, flexible, highly organized, reliable, forward-thinking, and use self-governing judgment.
  • A good sense of humor and willingness to assist others no matter how small the task.
  • Be competent.  Be unquestionably ethical. Have humility. Work hard. Celebrate wins.
  • Experience with remote work.
  • [BONUS] Prior experience supporting a growing sales function.
  • [BONUS] Prior experience working with tech or SaaS companies.
  • [BONUS] Experience with a Contract Lifecycle Management system preferred (e.g., Ironclad, SAP CLM, Avvoka, Conga, Spotdraft, or the like).
  • [BONUS] Experience creating knowledge management resources such as contract negotiation playbooks to drive efficiency.
  • [BONUS] Familiarity with Notion, Asana, and any e-billing/ matter management system.
  • [BONUS] Electronic signature software experience preferred (e.g., HelloSign, DocuSign).
