About Ought

Ought is a product-driven machine learning lab building Elicit, an AI research assistant. Elicit uses language models to automate and support research processes like literature and evidence review. Elicit applies frontier technology to serious use cases, enabling our research team to understand in great detail where language models fail and how to mitigate such failures.

About the role

We are a small team, and you will be our first dedicated Infrastructure engineer. You'll be pleased to know we have relatively little operational baggage, as the apps we're working on are less than a year old and deployed in Kubernetes on AWS.

In addition to making hands-on changes to our application and ML infrastructure, data pipelines, CI/CD system, and developer experience, we are looking for a candidate who can help us identify and prioritise what projects would be most impactful to the organisation. As such, here's a list of projects that we know we'd like your help on, but this should be taken as examples only:

We have a few people in the Bay Area, but a bunch of us are remote – and we're open to candidates anywhere in timezones we can make work. You will report to the head of engineering.

About you

  • The ideal candidate has several years experience working on infrastructure: e.g. production and test environments, ML model management, data pipelines, CI/CD.
  • Kubernetes, AWS, GitHub, and DataDog experience would be a plus.
  • You should be familiar with the principles of GitOps.
  • You are excited to get your hands dirty on difficult technical problems – you won't initially have a team to delegate to.
  • You have a bias towards action, and a preference for iterative improvement.
  • Great communication skills – obviously when discussing with engineers, but also when describing your work to non-technical teammates.

You'll especially enjoy working at Ought if you have:

  • Interest in AI, ML, language models, and AI safety in general.
  • A startup mindset. We expect to measure our impact in part by the people whose lives we improve through better reasoning and models of the future
