About Open Core Ventures
Open Core Ventures (OCV) is a venture capital firm that starts commercial open source software companies. We identify open source software projects with traction, recruit a founding team, and launch new companies. OCV companies aim to create tangible value for the open source community by providing access to resources and reducing the barrier to entrepreneurship.
OCV believes in the power of open core, and the impact of open learning and collaboration. Our approach diverges from conventional venture capital because OCV starts companies and recruits founders; OCV does not invest in existing companies. The OCV model enables experienced, capable, and technical founders to launch a successful startup. Sid Sijbrandij, founder and CEO of GitLab, serves as our General Partner. Our long-term north star is to start 2,000 new portfolio companies per year.
About The Business Operations Team
The Business Operations role enables OCV's success by supporting the research, founder recruiting, and company formation processes. This role also works closely with our portfolio company management teams. We’re looking for a builder and a problem-solver who exudes an entrepreneurial spirit and possesses strong analytical and technical skills to tackle business challenges across industries. OCV is a lean team with ambitious goals. We’re nimble and constantly iterating to adapt and refine our operating model. Below presents sample responsibilities which will likely evolve over time based on our business needs.
Responsibilities
- Prepare research on open source software projects, industry and competitors analysis, to shape commercialization models and go-to-market strategies
- Support new company formation steps including bank and systems setup, legal document review, and manage workflows with external vendors
- Manage certain compliance driven projects for OCV and our companies
- Identify areas for process improvement and automation opportunities and implement solutions
- Contribute to OCV’s handbook on documentation of our recommendations for portfolio companies and refine and implement existing processes
- Manage analytics for portfolio company benchmarking and reporting
- Run financial models as needed
Required Qualifications
- Technical + business background
- Understanding of basic startup and vc financing considerations
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment with limited oversight
- Ability to independently resolve business issues (sometimes creatively), prioritize and manage projects, and quick to adapt in a dynamic environment
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Prudent business judgment
- Passion for venture and startups
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science / Engineering + Business Background required
- 2-5 years of work experience in strategy or operations at a technology company, management consulting, investment banking, or venture capital
- Remote work experience in a rapidly scaling start-up environment
