The Risk Management team creates competitive advantage for OnDeck through excellence in risk/reward optimization while simultaneously exercising its function of control in a vigorous and diligent fashion. The Risk Management team develops strategies and models to extend credit in a profitable manner to small businesses and their owners based on a strong understanding of the behavioral and commercial drivers of its customers and on sophisticated analysis of data. As the control function of OnDeck, the Risk Management Team ensures that that the portfolio, policies, strategies, new product features or operational processes at OnDeck are consistent with the risk appetite set by the management team and the board.

OnDeck has a unique hybrid underwriting structure where the underwriting team seamlessly complements the automated credit models and is critical to the commercial success of the company. As Senior Director of Underwriting, you will lead a seasoned team of underwriters and develop the strategies to further the goals of the company as well as the efficiency of the team.

As the Senior Director of Underwriting at OnDeck on the Risk team you will:

  • Be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the team that underwrites and structures credit products to small business merchants.
  • Develop the capabilities, policies and procedures and the strategy of the team to grow both in the existing product set as well as future product initiatives.
  • Manage and develop the UW team performance metric goals and the compensation structure.
  • In collaboration with the risk team optimize the decision path of merchants within the hybrid structure.
  • Work cross-functionally with software development and core business teams to coordinate policy changes and rollouts.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as sales and operations and establish efficient structures and processes that meet agreed-upon SLAs.
  • Establish a deep understanding of OnDeck’s automated credit models so as to guide the UW team in its assessment.

Necessary qualifications for success:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
  • 10-15 years of commercial lending, credit, or underwriting experience
  • 5+ years of people management experience and team management experience
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong analytical and intuitive investigative skills and knowledge in the development of report
  • Strong independent decision making capabilities

Nice-to-haves (not required):

  • Experience with SQL, Tableau, Python, JIRA, Confluence
