The Opportunity: 

Ohalo Genetics is seeking a motivated Research Associate I. The successful candidate will contribute to the advancement of plant varieties by actively participating in different breeding projects, including but not limited to, organizing and conducting crossing and phenotyping in the greenhouse and open field, supporting seed cleaning, storage, shipment and testing, collaborating with the database manager to retain an active inventory of stocks, assisting in the maintenance of a functional molecular and tissue culture lab ,and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. The candidate will spend 80% of their time on organization and execution of crossing programs and related activities, and 20% on data management and analysis. 

 

Below is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including experience, education, skillset, and other relevant qualifications. This range is for the North Carolina location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.

Anticipated hiring range: $50,000 - $60,000

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain organized records for plant materials and experiments, keeping on top of multiple processes running in parallel.
  • Monitor plant conditions and growth, alerting other team members or taking defined actions as needed. 
  • Coordinate, take lead on, and participate in greenhouse trials.
  • Collaborate with other Technicians, Research Associates and Scientists to exchange information necessary to ensure that critical processes are completed.    
  • Present experimental observations clearly.
  • Participate in scientific discussions related to experiments.
  • Perform all tasks in a manner consistent with and in support of all company policies and practices related to safety and compliance. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Candidate Profile: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Plant Breeding, Plant Science, or related field with 1-2 years of related experience.
  • Ability to accurately follow verbal and written instructions, ask clarifying questions and articulate challenges.
  • Ability to take notes such that instructions can be carried out accurately again at later times. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time and do repetitive motions.
  • Ability to take a proactive approach to routine tasks and to actively ask for more tasks if there’s free time after routine and assigned tasks are completed.
  • Must be observant, patient and careful.
  • Must have a positive attitude and good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be passionate about learning and enthusiastic about plants and hands-on work.

 

Desired skills/experience: 

  • Knowledge of plant science, plant breeding, and molecular biology.
  • Any training and experience relevant to the job preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word) and Google Suite (Mail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive).
