We’re looking for a senior content strategist to help us start up a new Policy Lab focused on creating and adopting principles, rules, and standards we need to deliver more human-centered and modern services for Austin residents.


Our teams are working to improve a wide range of city services, including researching and redesigning our permitting processes, designing and delivering the future digital platform for Austin residents, and creating city-wide standards for service design, web development, and user research.

This position is part of a new Policy Lab we are starting within the Office of Design & Delivery. Our Policy Lab aims to create, adopt, and share principles, standards, and guidance that support and scale more human-centered and modern digital services for Austin residents. You will play a critical role in standing up our team, developing and demonstrating new approaches to City policy, and sharing practices across the City government.

Salary and benefits

  • $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience

This is a full time, 40-hour/week position with no term limit. However, it is designated as a "temporary position" within the City. This means:

What you’ll do

  • Serve on multidisciplinary teams to concept, prototype, and implement content solutions for complex policy issues (for example, accessible and plain-language translations of complicated policy documents)
  • Engage with internal and external users and participate in planning thoughtful and ethical user research and usability testing of what we create
  • Help set up and manage platforms for organizing content so that policy information is findable, searchable, and usable for users
  • Build relationships with public servants, residents, and other stakeholders to share content practices and scale our impact
  • Guide and coach team members and stakeholders on content strategy and writing for the web, especially colleagues who are taking on new tasks and roles
  • Communicate about our policy work via presentations, briefings, blog posts, and other venues
  • Contribute to strategy and planning for the Policy Lab, including mapping the ecosystem of policy issues and prioritizing issues to focus on
  • Work closely with colleagues that are building the future web presence of the City of Austin and identify where policy can help us design and deliver more human-centered and modern digital services for residents
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the hiring process for additional design and technology specialists

What we’re looking for

  • Three years of professional experience designing content for online experiences, websites, applications, or advertising
  • Knowledge of lean and agile design methodologies, including expertise in determining when and how to use specific approaches, deliverables, and facilitation methods
  • Ability to engage with a wide range of digital specialists, subject-matter experts, stakeholders, and the public to produce best-in-class solutions
  • Experience analyzing and participating in qualitative user research
  • Familiarity with policy or governance processes from government, business, or community experience
  • Knowledge of web standards and best practices related to accessibility, usability, and writing for the web
  • A passion for public service and a commitment to doing the hard work that’s necessary to improve our city services

Minimum qualifications

  • Two years of relevant work experience
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in a related field. An additional 4 years of experience can substitute this education requirement
