What does the team do

As part of our Advanced Technology division, our talented robotics engineering teams are working to automate physical processes that require sensing and judgement through the use of robotics and machine vision.

Currently, our focus is on robotic pick of groceries. Our solutions use sensors, robotic arms and grippers and applications of cutting-edge research in manipulation and control to pick customers’ orders. 

By using what we have learnt from the development of our robotic pick, we have been able to create even more cutting edge products,which help us to move pallets of stock and completed orders through our CFCs.

Our division is growing, and so we need great software engineers and roboticists of varied levels of experience to join us, forge a great team together, and drive the advancement of revolutionary robotics and automation.

What will I be doing?

You will be in charge of the software that operates our new mechatronic devices from the early stages of development. You will also be responsible for the integration of the software and hardware components and leading the design of tests to validate the correct operation of the devices.

This role involves … . 

  • Collaborating on system architecture design (hardware and software)
  • Designing and implementing systems integration software to suit the functionality of custom designed hardware
  • Testing, validation and verification of complete software/hardware system performance
  • Working collaboratively with other team members with expertise in other engineering disciplines

What we are looking for

  • Degree in Computer Systems Engineering or equivalent 
  • High proficiency programming in C/C++ and Python
  • Knowledge of  ROS
  • Knowledge and interest in interfacing with robots and mechatronics devices
  • Experience on integration and testing of software into hardware devices
  • Experience of designing and delivering APIs
  • Experience of designing and delivering GUIs
  • Knowledge of Design Patterns
  • Experience with, and understanding of, computer systems scheduling and resource allocation including
    • Process and thread management
    • Inter-process communication and synchronisation
    • Semaphores
    • Shared memory
    • Handling interrupts
    • Direct memory access
    • Multi-core processing
    • Remote procedure calls
  • Experience of writing device drivers
  • An appreciation of the principles involved in hardware and software co-design
  • Knowledge of communications protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, Fieldbus, serial)

Bonus points if you have…

  • Familiarity with containerisation technologies e.g. Docker
  • Previous experience with writing software for robotic or prosthetic devices
  • Understanding of the trade-offs involved in realising a particular functionality in the various technology domains (viz. electronic/mechanical/software)
  • An appreciation of the OSI model of communications
  • Relevant post-graduate degree
