What does the team do

You will join Advanced Technology, which is a division within Ocado Technology that solely focuses on the development of strategic and specifically complex and emergent technologies that are critical to the future of Ocado, Ocado Smart Platform (our B2B grocery business) and now General Merchandise.

One of the specialist areas of focus for the division is autonomous mobility. The Autonomous Mobility team works on mobile automated systems including systems that can deliver customer orders from a distribution facility to a customer’s house using a road-based, goods-carrying autonomous vehicle (with no human passenger). Ultimately this will be extended to feature a robotic system for carrying the groceries from the autonomous vehicle to the customer’s doorstep and then into the kitchen.

What would I be doing?

Your main responsibility would be to participate effectively in all stages of systems development life cycle including:

  • Requirements analysis
  • System design
  • System development, working in conjunction with third party suppliers
  • Deployment of production ready systems
  • Maintenance and support of systems
  • Investigation and resolution of production issues

You will also be responsible for:

  • constantly improving the standards of engineering craftsmanship by following the latest trends in Automotive Engineering, frameworks, tools and techniques, attending conferences, mentoring others and performing technology reviews
  • making sure that our system is testable and properly tested (preferably in an automated way) to be in conformance with relevant automotive and other standards
  • designing and implementing systems so that they can be tested, deployed and scaled
  • implementing monitoring and alerting, for immediate feedback when things go wrong
  • working closely with team leaders to set technical direction within the team and to ensure systems are developed to a consistently high standard, are cohesive and meet business objectives
  • assisting team leaders with requirements and design, and helping ensure projects are accurately estimated and delivered to schedule
  • working closely with team leaders on mentoring colleagues and take an active role in their development

This role will be based in Welwyn Garden City although travel to other sites is anticipated, possibly for extended periods, depending on the project work.

What we are looking for

  • Automotive product development experience: design, development, introduction to manufacture, approvals, product and project management for automotive systems.
  • Multidisciplinary skills in relevant engineering disciplines: design, CAD, software, electronics, mechanics, control, safety, project management, project risk management
  • Evidence of outstanding intellectual capability, such as:
    • Excellent academics; or
    • Challenging professional projects and / or side projects; or
    • Engaging relevant extracurricular activities (e.g. relevant personal engineering projects); or
    • Specific expertise in relevant areas e.g. safety / legal accreditation / supply chain
