Within Ocado Group sits Platform Implementation, whose mission is ‘to orchestrate the implementation of Ocado’s platforms globally’. This department focuses on the full programme management life cycle of the implementation of our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) - from pre-deal, through to the design, construction, installation, testing and ‘go-live’ phases (with all the process and portfolio management in between). This department is instrumental in ensuring we deliver these CFCs on time, to budget, and to the specific requirements of each client.

Within Platform Implementation sits the Product Application Engineering team who are responsible for the application, configuration and ongoing life support of our solutions used to power our automated CFCs. They are the engineering experts providing centralised specialist knowledge to multiple teams within Ocado.

The Product Engineering Specialist carries out the applications and configuration engineering of material handling equipment (MHE) systems for our new build CFC’s around the world. Working with external suppliers, the Product Engineering Specialist is responsible for driving the products from concept design through to completion, working cross-functionally with stakeholders, either in the office or on-site whilst maintaining in-depth product knowledge The Product Engineering Specialist is to provide ongoing product support to Engineering Operations to resolve any engineering issues as well as providing valuable feedback for future CFC’s


What will you be doing?... 

  • Carry out the configuration and application engineering detail
  • Support with installation expertise, ensuring best practice is followed and understood and product engineering challenges are resolved with out-sourced and single site solutions, project manage the engineering aspects to ensure successful project delivery end to end.
  • Identify, and manage the resolution of engineering change requests and product improvements, taking full accountability and responsibility for changes on your products.
  • Review, maintain and communicate related product technical documentation (including but not limited to FDS’s, manuals, BoM’s, install guides, FAT, PDI & SAT checklists)
  • Review designs for MHE systems to ensure conformance with Ocado PLC code requirements
  • On-site and off-site pre-checks of vendor equipment build and modifications
  • Provide engineering product support, especially during design, installation & commissioning phases
  • Proactively support engineering supply chain with engineering detail, including acceptance testing, and order specification
  • Ensure system integrity by collaborating with product engineers from other streams to ensure that any changes or issues in one area do not negatively impact another product or overall system.
  • Troubleshoot fieldbus networks using software and hardware diagnostic tools
  • Liaise with Asset Handling Automation team to report issues or improvements to the control of the MHE.
  • Create and maintain SCADA visualisation for the warehouse, including any supporting systems such as OPC servers
  • Identify problems with IT networking to the MHE and work with the technical support team to resolve any issues.
  • Support 3rd party suppliers in their commissioning and acceptance testing using Ocado supplied code libraries.
  • Investigate faults reported by the operations team, identify whether it is a software or hardware fault.
  • Support roll outs of new features or fixing urgent software issues.
  • Provide training to engineering operations on manual recovery of machines, use of SCADA and fundamentals of PLC architecture and operation.
  • Organise the provision of support for existing equipment in the field as required. This may be in the form of training and documentation for onsite support teams or direct on-call or on-site support.
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the functionality and operation of all supplied equipment. Participate / initiate discussion on improvements and modifications with other teams and internally.

About you...


  • Siemens TIA portal (V14/V15/V16)
  • Profinet commissioning and troubleshooting
  • Experience with 24v roller drives such as Interroll, TGW KingDrive
  • Understanding of electrical drawings and basic electrical fault finding skills
  • Materials handling and automation background
  • Experience in conveyor design
  • Experience of projects and products in FMCG distribution, waste/materials recycling facility, airports or similar field
  • Project Engineering - demonstrable experience & success
  • Field Installation of products and / or systems
  • Acceptance Testing
  • Commissioning of systems
  • IT literate, proficient with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite and comfortable using CAD packages.
  • Excellent technical and practical competence relating to automation and general engineering
  • Aptitude to debate detail (both technical and commercial) with both internal and external parties
  • Commercially aware and consider cost impacts on decisions and proposals
  • Technical / Engineering qualification to degree level

Preferred (in addition to minimum):

  • Profibus & ASI bus troubleshooting
  • Inverter setup with Schneider SoMove or SEW Motion Studio
  • Siemens safety PLC and experience with functional safety systems
  • Working knowledge of a range of project management skills, tools and approaches
  • Remote Product Support
  • International working experience
