What does the Team do

The External Collaborations team builds relationships and projects with academic and industrial R&D partners to investigate and evaluate future technologies and methodologies to support the innovations in Ocado Technology. 

We are a small team of engineers, researchers, designers and analysts defining and working on projects such as PROTEIN, a EU Horizon2020 funded project on Personalised Nutrition and Activity; Hertfordshire Living Lab, for a range of experimentation in the wild; and Airspace of the Future, investigating the future applications of drones; and Code For Life, our flagship digital skills programme. The team disseminates the project results into Ocado Technology to launch exploitation and manages collaboration through reporting, workshops and research conferences.

What would I be doing?

You’ll be part of a small but growing research coordination team to support cutting-edge activities in robotics and automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, smart services and innovative projects for grocery logistics. You will have experience in being part of an innovation team that looks to lead and define research objectives and manage projects that extend the state of the art, supporting the future business technology requirements. Experience of technology transfer for TRLs 3 to 9 is a bonus. The role would suit someone with keen understanding in the following areas and their real-world applications:

  • Robotics, autonomous systems, including autonomous vehicles and drones,
  • Artificial intelligence and smart services,
  • Personalised nutrition (including human health monitoring),
  • IOT, and data analysis

The roles and responsibilities of this role include:

  • Project management for innovation and research, in particular assist in the administration and partner management for EU Horizon Europe, InnovateUK and ESA funded projects
  • Promote and liaise with universities to increase the outreach of the Code For Life platform
  • Internal engagement across innovation teams to promote and enable collaboration in research aims, including organisation of workshops and conferences.
  • External engagement to represent Ocado and Ocado Technology in workshops, demonstrations, funding meetings to foster collaborations and promote the innovation and research activities
  • Searching for relevant funding from UK and EU in research and innovation and build external collaborations with companies and universities align with the aims of the business.
  • Understand research objectives, related to business value and benefits
  • Understand research methodologies, data quality, and evaluation process when engaging with partners to produce the right output
  • Assist with public engagement, through website, social media, producing material and representing the company at events
  • Understand Intellectual Property Rights, helping to formulate and defend contracts of work and non-disclosure agreements
  • Interface between research projects and development projects in both directions

We would love to hear from you if you have experience:

  • Writing successfully granted funding proposals in any of the following technology areas:
    • Robotics, autonomous systems, including autonomous vehicles and drones,
    • Artificial intelligence and smart services,
    • Personalised nutrition (including human health monitoring),
    • IOT, and data analysis
  • Working in a multi-party research project, funded by a government agency or EU
  • Working with a mix of industry and academic partners
  • Identifying areas of innovation, exploiting research, and identifying potential risks
  • Public and industry engagement in presentations, workshops and (social) media

This would make you stand out from the crowd:

  • Managing consortiums for delivery of objectives and monitoring finances
  • Working on and writing grant proposals for EU H2020, InnovateUK, or EPSRC projects
  • Reporting on project progress in periodic reports and financial reporting
  • Financial project management of public funded projects
  • Research and business management backed by technical knowledge
  • Software engineering practices, in particular agile methodologies and data informed decision making
