About the Role

Obligo is looking for a talented, curious, and motivated Corporate Counsel to join our growing Legal Team in New York.  Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will assist the GC in a wide variety of matters, with a special focus on advancing the company’s product compliance strategy, including key coordination on new product launches and partnerships.  Our innovative products raise novel and challenging questions that demand a thoughtful, creative, and collaborative approach to issue spotting and solutioning.  You’ll partner with the Product, Sales, Business Development, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to support the design, implementation, and sale of new products and features within the relevant regulatory frameworks.  In addition, you will support the GC in developing an integrated and dynamic legal department that is client and business-focused, supportive, and responsive to the changing needs of a growing tech company.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the GC in collaborating with external counsel and advisors to stay ahead of evolutions in a complex regulatory landscape, including payments, credit, collection, privacy and renter-landlord relations on a national, multi-state and often municipal level
  • Research laws and regulations applicable to our evolving product suite; draft compliance maps and memos to document product guidelines 
  • Provide support to the GC, executive and Product teams on navigating our compliance framework to assist in the development of new features and products
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to support the CEO, COO, & GC in the implementation of better processes and/or vendor relationships 
  • Assist the Product team in writing & reviewing clear, concise copy to ensure terms and disclosures are easily understood by landlords and renters
  • Support the Security & Finance teams to prepare for our annual SOC 1 & SOC 2 audits
  • Partner with the GC & Executive Team to develop a company lobbying strategy, tracking relevant legislation and proposed bills, building coalitions, and prioritizing outreach and relationship development as needed to support positive & oppose negative legislation
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to review key content prior to publication and to develop content regarding real estate regulations to be shared on our blog, with partners, and with investors
  • Work alongside the GC on contract development, negotiation, and maintenance, provision of counsel to business partners, fundraising, lobbying, and other company priorities as needed 

 

About You

You possess (and love to use) superior legal research and drafting skills, agile problem-solving abilities, and the ability to communicate comfortably with vendors, customers, partners and investors. You love working cross-functionally, taking ownership, and being presented with a challenge.  You are business oriented and possess sound judgment and discretion, making you a trusted counsel on sensitive topics.  You are hungry for an amazing opportunity to be in-house counsel in the technology start-up space, learning everyday alongside the GC in a variety of subjects and situations.  You are passionate about working at a growing, mission-based company and supporting continuing innovation!  

 

About Your Experience

  • 4-6 years’ relevant experience at a law firm or government agency
  • Juris Doctor degree and admitted to practice in at least one US jurisdiction
  • Familiarity with launching products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development in the technology space
  • Knowledge of/experience working with statutes and regulations relating to real estate, credit, lending, payment processing, privacy, and/or data security regulations
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distill complex legal issues into an understandable narrative for diverse audiences 
  • Experience effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated capability to navigate ambiguities and find creative, risk-based solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to be self-directed and flexible in a fast-paced environment while balancing multiple priorities
  • Superior organizational and time management skills
  • Analytical mindset and impeccable attention to detail
  • Skilled at relationship-building

Base Salary Range: $165,000 - $185,000
