The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO’s Transmission Integration department invites applications for a full-time Planning Engineer.
The Planning Engineer will be part of a dynamic team responsible for performing studies evaluating system reliability, economic, and regulatory impacts of transmission projects proposed through the Public Policy Transmission Planning Process. Analyses performed by Planning Engineers support transmission infrastructure development in New York State required achieve a reliable and efficient transition to an 100% emission free grid by 2040.
In this position the Planning Engineer will:
- Participate in planning activities to evaluate the performance of transmission projects proposed in the Public Policy Transmission Planning Process
- Coordinate development of transmission projects with Transmission Owners and Developers
- Collaborate with muti-disciplinary teams to review reports and identify impact of transmission projects on the New York State Transmission System
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and consultants to communicate technical methods and study results
- Present technical findings within the Planning team, other NYISO departments, as well as to stakeholders.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Engineering, or Applied Science is required. Course studies in power systems and/or energy are highly desired. Master’s degree (MS) desired.
- Experience in detailed electrical design and engineering of transmission systems, preparation and/or review of transmission project proposals is required.
- Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams to meet project deadlines and deliverables is desired.
- Experience in areas such as power system planning, energy policy analysis and/or power plant operations is desired.
- Experience in power flow applications software (PTI PSS/E, PSS/MUST, GE PSLF, or PowerGem TARA) to perform system studies is desirable.
Candidates who possess Associate level (less than 2 years of experience) or Senior level (seven years of experience) skills and qualifications are also encouraged to apply.

- Ability to read, analyze and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write presentations and articles using prescribed techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations and proofs of theorems.
- Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications, e-mail and internet programs.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills required.

Work Environment
