Role Overview  

We have an exciting opportunity to act in a key role to help grow the Instrumentation & Control (I&C) engineering section of NPX’s Design Engineering group by supporting one of our main clients. We are looking for an intermediate I&C engineer with design experience particularly related to I&C systems and components in CANDU plants. This role is to act as an Assigned Design Engineer (ADE) within the Bruce Power I&C Component Design Engineering section. As is usual for all NPX roles, you also need to be able to demonstrate the ability to rethink the usual way of doing things and to solve problems for our customers efficiently, providing them with value-added support that stands out from our competitors.

NOTE: This is a Bruce Power site-based role, embedded full-time in the client organization; the minimum requirement is 3 days/week on-site, or more as required by specific work tasks.

Responsibilities

Perform the role of Bruce Power ADE on various tasks and projects as assigned by the Section Manager or Owner’s Engineers. ADE activities typically comprise the following:

  • Review/verify Technical Specifications and/or Task Definition Specifications
  • Prepare/verify engineering specifications.
  • Perform or support Engineering Changes (ECs) including:
    • Prepare Design Plans
    • Prepare/verify design/engineering Calculations.
    • Prepare/verify licensing screens to support EC.
    • Apply Design Guides to ECs
    • Verify design products.
    • Prepare/verify engineering drawings.
    • Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analyses
    • Perform Code Effective Date reconciliation of material/component or identify proposed alternatives.
    • Prepare/verify EC papers.
  • Procure and manage software products including:
    • Process software records.
    • Prepare/verify Software Development Plans
    • Prepare/verify software transition plans.
    • Prepare/verify software releases.
  • Prepare/verify System Design Manuals, Design Requirements and Design Descriptions
  • Prepare/verify a Design Registration and Reconciliation
  • Prepare/verify a system/item classification, and update safety-related systems list and System Classification Lists
  • Review technical documents prepared by an external design agency.
  • Emphasize continuous improvement and focus on bringing innovation, efficiency, and high quality to all engineering tasks and deliverables performed on behalf of the client. 

Technical Accountabilities 

  • Work with I&C Component Design Engineering section co-workers to solve design-related problems and process ECs in a timely manner.
  • Participate in design and related activities with other Bruce Power engineering teams, engineering vendor partners, and internal stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to define and maintain required component and system design functionality, performance, reliability, availability, and maintainability.
  • Support urgent emergent work particularly during outages, as required to suit outage timelines and as directed by the Section Manager.
  • Become proficient in and utilize Bruce Power’s enterprise document management system (Maximo) and procedures and forms required to submit design deliverables while meeting nuclear quality assurance standards.
  • Participate in and contribute to all required client and NPX internal and project-related meetings.
  • Act as an ambassador for NPX Design Engineering organization, through excellent quality of technical work and collaborative, innovative mindset.

What do you bring to the table?   

  • Completion of a 4-year University degree in an I&C related Engineering discipline (e.g. Electrical, Computer, Process Control).
  • Must be a licensed Ontario Professional Engineering (P.Eng.)
  • 4 years of experience in I&C engineering in the nuclear field is required.
  • Experience in a design engineering role is preferred.
  • Knowledge of related electrical
  • Good working knowledge of CANDU plant equipment and systems, particularly I&C and digital/software-related plant systems, as well as the plant design basis and nuclear safety principles is required.
  • Good working knowledge of the Bruce Power or OPG design/engineering change process is required, with Bruce Power experience preferred.
  • Proven understanding of the nuclear industry and Canadian regulatory standards, technical systems, equipment, methodologies, materials, and design practices and criteria. 
  • Cyber security and cyber essential asset requirements experience is beneficial. 
  • Able to identify and analyze technical design issues and generate effective solutions to resolve them.
  • Self-starting motivated individual able to produce high-quality deliverables in specified timelines and identify and communicate technical and project risks in a timely manner.
  • Effective verbal, written, and presentation communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Must have site access clearance at Canadian Nuclear Facilities, preferably Bruce Power. 
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 3 days/week at Bruce Power site, and flexible to work more than that on site when required.
