This role is for you if you are searching for and are energized by a day-to-day position that calls for both strategic and operational leadership as well as startup scrappiness to dig into the details and get things done. You could be giving a founder feedback on their GTM strategy in the morning and engaging with the team on how to refine the conference room booking system in the afternoon. 

Success in this role calls for deep operational chops and experience managing multiple projects at once, team leadership and management experience, and the ability to connect with startup founders and ecosystem partners. Success looks something like: increased team effectiveness, increased startup engagement, and revenue/margin expansion of the business. 

This is an in-person, five-day per week role at Newlab Brooklyn. This is because your team and customers are in-person. 

Role & Responsibilities 

  • Leadership of Newlab Membership Team at Newlab BK The role is accountable and responsible for Startup Membership in Brooklyn and oversees a diverse team of 12. The role leads the location-specific Membership team including membership and dedicated space pipeline, community, network, shared-services, product realization and facilities/operations. The role curates and executes the location-level Membership offering as well as engages in strategic development and integration with the global Membership team (Newlab membership for deep tech startups), Applied Innovation (industry consulting) and Ventures (direct investment and earned equity programs). 
  • Responsible for location Membership P/L The role is responsible for maintaining aspirational growth & revenue targets balanced with creative and detailed cost management, in service of our members and in context of our larger strategy. 
  • Ownership of the end-to-end experience at Newlab BK The role will balance and focus resources towards delivering an excellent and consistent member and guest experience. They will be responsible for identifying opportunities and developing strategic projects, partnerships and use of available resources towards the best possible global and local outcomes. The role will proactively create points of intersection and value between Startup Members and the other parts of Newlab’s business including Applied Innovation & Ventures.
  • Infrastructure & building-level management The role will own the relationship at the building-level with Brooklyn Navy Yard focused on building & associated infrastructure (Garage, walkways, etc…). This role will support development of new infrastructure, activation of spaces, utilization of spaces and strategic projects around Membership & surrounding environments. 
  • Mayor / POC for Members The role will regularly engage with member startups and founders on their strategic and tactical needs, providing mentorship as well as guidance on how to best utilize the Newlab ecosystem. The role should have a pulse on the health and needs of the member community, extracting patterns and insights to make informed bets about how to guide and direct resources to best serve the community. You will be the “Mayor” of Newlab Brooklyn. 

Essential Experience:

  • Team Management: Demonstrable success in leading multifaceted teams and executing cross-functional projects.
  • Financial Management: You are comfortable in spreadsheets, with a proven record in driving revenue and cost management.
  • Real Estate / Co-Working / Service Scaling: Experience in enhancing customer value in a scaling business via new services, focusing on retention and engagement.
  • Strategy & Operations: You are willing to be a leader and internal consultant to solve all types of problems with the team. Proficiency in designing and implementing processes to amplify efficiency.
  • Relationship Development: Proven track record in building relationships with different types of partners and customers and within an organization. 

Bonus Points for:

  • Prior Founder/Startup Experience: You know what building and moving fast looks like. 
  • Community Building: Demonstrated experience building community and relationships.
  • NYC Tech Ecosystem: Strong affiliations with NYC's tech ecosystem, including civic groups.

Compensation & Benefits: 

  • We expect this role's base salary to be $150,000 - $200,000 commensurate with a candidate's experience. 
  • Eligible for bonus and equity programs. 
  • Fully covered Medical insurance available as well as dental and vision offered.
