NPR is looking for an experienced team leader to temporarily help guide the direction and growth of It’s Been a Minute and Code Switch while the current EP is on extended leave. We’re looking for a creative and organized thinker to help articulate and execute the vision and growth strategy for these shows, prioritizing ambitious culture journalism that helps audiences deepen their understanding and appreciation of the world around them. 

You will oversee showrunners and hosts as well as provide editorial consultation on the development of new shows, concepts, and limited-run series. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders across NPR – and externally – to ensure the work has maximum impact, cultivating new audiences across radio, podcasts, and digital channels.

You have strong editorial judgment and a track record for elevating diverse voices and perspectives. You’re an outstanding manager and developer of talent who encourages curiosity and innovation, helping advance ideas from NPR hosts, producers, editors, as well as external contributors. You think deeply about how dynamic, culturally responsive audio storytelling serves audiences in a meaningful way. In all of your work, as Executive Producer, you will actively work to cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee a portfolio of shows, supervising showrunners and hosts.
  • Help set the editorial agenda, in collaboration with hosts and other editorial staff, then empower, motivate, and encourage staff to achieve goals, creatively removing obstacles along the way.
  • Support the development and completion of a new limited-run series currently being piloted. Duties include, but aren’t limited to, editing, managing production schedule, and providing editorial guidance.
  • Develop and execute a growth plan, including establishing and regularly measuring progress to goals (including plans for audience growth).
  • Develop and execute a plan to increase the profitability of each show.
  • Ensure the editorial, production, and technical quality of shows meets NPR standards.
  • Manage relationships with a variety of internal stakeholders, and pursuing relationships with outside contributors and organizations, including NPR Member stations
  • Prepare regular performance reviews and make recommendations regarding budgets, hiring, and promotions.
  • Establish a structured environment for creative work.
  • Push the ambition of teams on all fronts is key — innovating in craft, format, journalism, narrative, insight, all of it.
  • Be ambitious, thinking up large-scale projects for teams to tackle collaboratively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience building and managing audio teams.
  • Experience leading podcast teams on a high level, articulating a vision and goals, motivating a team, maintaining high morale, and infusing the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and creativity into every aspect of the editorial process.
  • Strong organizational skills. Extensive experience building and overseeing successful production workflow and systems for teams.
  • Experience managing a budget for projects or departments.
  • Experience collaborating on large-scale projects with other teams and divisions.
  • Ability to have tough conversations with empathy and kindness, addressing pain points and finding solutions.
  • Experience aiding in the professional development of showrunners, hosts and junior staff.
  • Experience expanding, deepening and serving audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a decisive leader, as well as a collaborative team member.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep understanding of how to cover culture, race, and identity. 
  • Experience editing the work of others.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Minimum education experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in audio journalism/long-form

WORK LOCATION

  • Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the New York City office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

JOB TYPE

  • This is a temporary (6-month) full time position.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $85.09 - $86.54 an hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
