The Supervising Editor for Standards and Practices will be a passionate, experienced journalist who understands and values the need for regular, consistent application of standards and practices, and the need for a strong ethical approach to journalism. The Supervising Editor will be part of a team of standards and practices editors and work closely with the Managing Editor for Standards and Practices on the development & application of standards and practices across all of our platforms, in partnership with other content division leaders. The Supervising Editor will tackle many of the day to day ethical and reporting issues that arise throughout the news cycle, as part of the standards team that works with the content division to continue to evolve our guidelines, language and coverage practices to meet the times we are living in.

The scope of work that will be reviewed by this editor and the team will range from daily news content to long-form journalism, from social media posts to conversational podcasts to narrative podcasts and more; this means the editor should be comfortable working across different formats and platforms, where audiences differ, and understand how best to apply standards and practices given the particular context.

Two Supervising Editors will be hired for this role. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as one of the primary point people in the content division, and across the NPR network, on Standards & Practices questions. You will work with editors, reporters and producers across NPR’s many content platforms to respond to standards and practices questions on a daily basis. The breadth of content you will engage in will range from quick-turn breaking news stories to long-term investigative projects. 
  • Meet as required with journalism affinity groups to gather input on language considerations.
  • Working with content leaders, regularly review and update the NPR stylebook and ethics handbook as needs evolve.
  • Develop and maintain relations with NPR member stations newsrooms, and occasionally represent NPR to member stations or at events regarding journalism standards and ethics.
  • Proactively issue coverage guidance ahead of big news events.
  • Provide regular and constructive feedback and career development for performance evaluations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10 years of journalism experience delivering to multiple platforms, preferably at the national level.
  • 5 years of supervisory and managerial experience leading teams through major stories, and complex coverage areas.
  • Demonstrated excellence navigating the terrain of ethical questions that regularly arise regarding broadcast, digital content, podcasts and social media.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience editing for audio.
  • Familiarity with NPR member stations and public media system.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

WORK LOCATION

  • On-site: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC. The employee will be expected to be on-site at a frequency set by their manager. They will have some flexibility to work remotely on occasion, as agreed upon by their manager.

  • This is a full time, exempt position.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $140,000 - $160,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
