Manager, Product Design
INTRO TO POSITION
As the Manager of Design, you will lead NPR’s strategic design efforts, driving initiatives that elevate the overall design impact across multiple workstreams. Your focus will be on shaping the design vision and overseeing the development of design systems to enhance the quality and consistency of design output. This role is critical in amplifying the strategic influence of design within NPR’s digital products projects and across the NPR network, ensuring that design aligns with both user needs and business goals.
You will spearhead efforts to integrate design thinking into our operations, iterating on how our teams work together to produce creative, user-centered solutions. RESPONSIBILITIES
Define and implement a design strategy that aligns with business goals, ensuring that design plays a key role in product and service development.
Utilize analytics and user feedback to measure the impact of design decisions and iterate on design strategies to optimize performance.
Leads and mentors a team of Product Designers and Design Technologists - preparing regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions
Partner with product management, engineering, marketing, research, and executive teams to align design initiatives with broader business objectives.
Ensure that all design decisions are informed by user research, data, and user-centered design methodologies.
Articulate design strategy and the value of design to partners and stakeholders, ensuring buy-in and alignment at all levels of the organization.
Act as a point of contact for facilitation, workshops, and design services ensuring that ICs across the design team have what they need to help our colleagues across the organization participate in design.
Collaborate with cross-division managers and individual contributors to improve design processes, tools, and infrastructure to enhance team productivity and collaboration.
Encourage experimentation and innovation within the design team, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible while staying aligned with user needs and business priorities.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to the design team, helping to elevate their skills and align their work with strategic goals.
Identify opportunities for refining the design process, adopting new tools, and staying ahead of industry trends to maintain a competitive edge.
Communicate the value of design and evangelize our work within NPR, throughout the Member station network, and the global design community.
Personally work on the entire lifecycle of specific products, as needed: research, prototyping, design, and collaboration on implementation and iteration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Proven track record of leading design strategies and shipping digital products and services that meet both user and business needs.
2+ years leading or managing a team or project, including skills in talent development, coaching, mentoring, objective setting and team motivation.
Experience designing across multiple platforms (desktop, mobile, connected devices) and contexts, including both user-facing and internal tools.
Strong proficiency in design thinking and agile project methodologies, with the ability to integrate these approaches into daily workflows.
Versatility in prototyping techniques, from low to high fidelity, adapting methods based on project needs and timelines.
Deep curiosity for user behavior and emerging technologies, with a focus on how they influence design and user interaction.
Solid understanding of technology frameworks that power digital products, such as APIs, web and mobile platforms, content management systems, and Google Analytics for data-driven insights and decision-making.
Experience using analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to track user behavior, assess product performance, and inform design iterations.
A passion for storytelling and presenting design strategies clearly and persuasively to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
WORK LOCATION
Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $138,150 - 153,750 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

China Correspondent
NPR is seeking a dynamic reporter for our Beijing Bureau. In this role as the primary correspondent for China, you will develop ideas/proposals for coverage of China, Hong Kong, and Asia. You’ll gather information and reporting for news programs, digital platforms – the website, podcasts and short-form videos – and prepare, present and transmit reports and program segments from abroad. You’ll work collaboratively across the NPR newsroom and network to respond to breaking news as well as broader projects that help NPR’s audience better understand this culturally rich, politically key and globally powerful region. Working with your editor(s), you will have the ability to take ownership of regional coverage from China, report breaking news and develop stories illustrating trends and significant political, economic, social, and cultural issues from China.
The job requires attention to detail, big picture thinking and concern about craft across all platforms. You also will engage with desk editors and NPR’s Field Security director to support field safety and security for yourself as well as others with whom you work.
This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conceives, proposes, plans, and researches ideas for stories and program segments for all NPR news platforms: news programs, digital, short-form video and podcasts.
Contributes original reporting and writing online, with a sophisticated understanding of how to tailor reporting and news to online audiences.
Develops news sources and keeps associated files.
Participates in departmental planning coverage
Communicates regularly with international desk editors about news developments and story ideas.
Covers stories as assigned by international desk editors.
Will involve frequent travel in China and the broader region, at times, under challenging conditions.
Gathers material on tape and otherwise, through interviews, press conferences, direct coverage of events. Advises editors of technical support required when and where necessary.
Fulfills administrative obligations arising from assignments, such as filing prompt and accurate expense records and program information/summaries; maintaining contact with editors and appropriate producers; keeping editors and appropriate producers informed about assignments.
Prepares and presents special reports, series, documentaries, and program segments examining important subjects in depth.
Does original, investigative reporting, including the generation of ideas, and concepts and the development of plans for such reporting.
Develops and makes use of extensive, proven broadcast production skills in the preparation of program materials and segments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 6 years broadcast experience, including international reporting and radio and digital production. Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of broadcast and digital journalism – writing, reporting, voicing, editing, producing full radio and digital pieces, use of microphones, recorders, computers and telecommunication transmissions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Fluency in Mandarin is strongly preferred.
Experience working overseas, especially in China, strongly preferred. Experience in living and/or working in difficult international situations is highly valuable.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
WORK LOCATION
Remote Required: This is a remote required role. This role includes duties that are better performed or are required to be performed in a designated location OUTSIDE of an NPR facility. The employee is required to work at a designated remote work location.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Must have experience in execution of sophisticated broadcast and online journalism, such as long-form features and documentaries.
Proven understanding of complex foreign policy issues, especially those involving China and Asia. In-depth knowledge of regional history, politics, and economics.
