MycoWorks is seeking an experienced senior fermentation scientist responsible for planning and executing fungal fermentation experiments, leading CRO efforts, and managing a small team of associate scientists and engineers. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of fermentation technology, both physiology and fungal. The candidate will work with folks with a variety of expertise within the team and cross-functionally including mycologists and other microbiologists, experts from downstream processing, quality, tech transfer, and  leather product development.  


  • Design and execute fermentation experiments on mycelial biomass production  
  • Develop and optimize scalable fermentation processes 
  • Lead on-going CRO work 
  • Manage fermentation engineer and associate scientists 
  • Work in close collaboration with the mycology and other upstream groups to assist with strategic initiatives and platform development 
  • Search, identify, demonstrate, and implement new processes, technologies, and instruments to optimize and automate fermentation workflows 
  • Help drive company vision and initiatives within Fine Mycelium R&D development group 
  • Maintain safe practices and working environment 
  • Support further development of Fine Mycelium R&D function within the company  
  • Manage junior team members 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph. D. with four plus years of experience in biochemical engineering, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, or a comparable combination of experience and training
  • Prior experience in the development and implementation of fungal fermentation would be ideal 
  • Experience scaling up processes and  working with CROs is required 
  • Two plus years of experience managing a team
  • Knowledgeable in systems and best practices for industrial fermentation 
  • Evenings and/or weekend work as experiments require 

Preferred Areas of Specialization: 

  • Prior fungal fermentation experience for scale-up 
  • Experience with Eppendorf Bioreactors 
  • Experience with fungal preservation techniques
