
Assistant General Counsel Director, Commercial - EU/UK
Marqeta Inc. is seeking an Assistant General Counsel Director, Commercial who will be an important member of Marqeta’s Commercial Legal Team and strategic partner to the Revenue, Product and Finance Teams in the UK / EU Region.
As the Assistant General Counsel Director, Commercial, you will lead commercial legal support in the UK / EU region to provide legal and business advice on Marqeta’s customer, bank and network partner, and vendor contracts and will help improve Marqeta’s contracting processes and procedures in the region. You will work closely with other in-house attorneys and outside counsel in providing best-in-class legal services to Marqeta’s fast-growing business in the UK / EU Market. You will build strong relationships across the entire Company and will have leadership visibility with Marqeta’s cross-functional teams and leaders on legal matters relating to Marqeta’s customers, partners and vendors.

You will report to the Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, Global Head of Commercial Legal.

The Impact You’ll Have
- Be a senior member of Marqeta’s in-house team of attorneys that support the sale of Marqeta’s products and services, partnerships and vendor agreements
- Work closely with cross-functional Marqeta internal sales, partnership, product, and operational colleagues and other Marqeta in-house attorneys to achieve successful strategic outcomes in a fast-paced business environment
- Assist with resolving complex issues in strategic customer, bank and network partner, and vendor agreements in the UK and EU markets and internationally
- Support Marqeta’s expansion in the UK and EU market by partnering with cross-functional teams in sales, product, compliance, and finance to help sell Marqeta’s products and services
- Work collaboratively across the Legal, Regulatory and Compliance team on cross-functional priorities and initiatives
- Collaborate on the development of agreement templates and playbooks for the Commercial Legal Team to drive scale, and cross-functional efficiencies, and offer creative solutions where appropriate
- Provide practical legal advice to the business and develop strong working relationships with the leadership in the UK / EU region, and across the Company with cross-functional peers and other business stakeholders
Who You Are
- 10+ years of experience in commercial contracts in the UK / EU and internationally, preferably experience at both a top law firm and in-house
- Industry experience in FinTech, payments, financial services/banking and/or software technology with a preference for issuing processing and/or issuing side card program management experience
- Strong working knowledge of the regulatory landscape in the payments and issuing space in the UK and EU
- Strong negotiating and drafting agreement skills
- A keen sense of ownership and the ability to independently drive complex projects to completion on tight timelines in a fast-moving, high-performing environment
- A solid business focus with practical risk awareness and the ability to balance legal risk mitigation against key business objectives and risks
- Experience working within an international corporate environment, ideally within a US-headquartered organisation
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work on teams and independently; ability to drive accountability and influence outcomes
- Strong leadership qualities with an ability to effectively engage and partner with other leaders in the UK / EU region
- The ability to challenge and be challenged both internally and with clients in a constructive and respectful way
- Advanced problem-solving skills, i.e., the ability to quickly digest a problem, evaluate various options/solutions and empower yourself and others to deliver
- Highly responsive, customer focused and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Team player with a positive attitude and commitment to excellence
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales
