We are looking for an experienced Email Operations Lead to help us execute on our messaging strategy and connect Pocket users to stories worth their time and attention. We recently migrated all our messaging — including email, push notifications, and in-app messaging — to Braze, and are excited and eager to take advantage of this new platform. 

As our Email Operations Lead, your job will be to own the day-to-day operations and administration of Braze, including testing and launching dynamic messaging campaigns, managing our Braze database and sending procedures, and more. You’ll be working closely with an incredible team of partners across Analytics, Editorial, Engineering, Marketing, and Product. Together, you’ll build compelling and effective messaging campaigns that help Pocket users keep up to date on the things they care about, read or watch stories they’ve saved for later, or stay informed about new features and value in the Pocket apps.

What you’ll do:

  • Be the subject matter expert for our day-to-day operations and administration in Braze.

  • Drive end-to-end execution of Pocket’s owned communication channels and messaging roadmap. 

  • Manage our Braze database (including custom fields, data flows and preference center / subscription management). 

  • Utilize HTML/CSS and general messaging best practices to create dynamic, easy-to-use templates for emails, push notifications, and in-app messaging. 

  • Set up, QA and launch complex messaging campaigns,  A/B tests with dynamic content, conduct post-experiment analyses and deep dives, and present recommendations and findings from test data

  • Create and refine user segmentation for messaging programs. 

  • Define send procedures and internal team permissions for messaging campaigns and oversee maintenance of messaging workflows. 

  • Manage Braze SDK by keeping up-to-date with the latest releases and communicating to Engineering.

  • Advise on the data handling and business logic for new messaging campaigns.

  • Identify structural maintenance needs and enhancement opportunities within the Braze platform and ecosystem. 

  • Partner with our Analytics team to track and measure multichannel campaigns, develop reporting dashboards and models, and socialize key learnings and results to the broader team. 

  • Collaborate closely with partners across Analytics, Editorial, Engineering, Marketing, and Product to create compelling and effective messaging programs. 

What you already have:

  • 5+ years experience working with Email Service Providers (ESPs), as well as related technology providers (eg: Movable Ink; LiveIntent)

  • Strong SQL knowledge 

  • Excellent understanding of email execution concepts and metrics; deliverability; best practices

  • Fluency in HTML/CSS to review, build and debug emails 

  • Strong understanding of data management and data exchange concepts

  • Deep knowledge in customer segmentation, list management, deliverability and CAN-SPAM; GDPR; CASL; Apple MPP laws and regulations around email and push notifications

  • Self-starter who can work independently and within a cross-functional team

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills

  • Passionate for automation, process and scaling marketing comms
