We are seeking a Senior Program Officer to join our growing Fellowships and Awards (F&A) team! Our team manages a grant making strategy providing essential funding and resources to partners in the movement for a healthier internet. Over the past year, we have gone through an extensive reflection process and developed an emerging grant making strategy to increase our impact. You will compliment our current team and provide leadership support on tech and policy issues, with a particular emphasis on the areas of focus we believe we can make real progress on within our Trustworthy AI strategy: transparency, bias and data stewardship.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating a high quality transformative experience to help engage and support fellows and awardees to create a more open and healthy internet. You will have issue area expertise that will allow you to serve as a peer/mentor/thought partner to a cohort of high impact AI experts. In addition to this role, you will support your colleagues across the team and our programs by providing insight based on your own expertise as it relates to internet freedom, internet health and/or the technologies upon which these are built.

The person in the role will work across the organization to connect our work internally, and with external movement partners on activities related to our Trustworthy AI goals. Your technical expertise will help shape our strategy and grow our community across issue areas and geographies during an exciting period of growth for Mozilla. You will report to the Director, F&A Program.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Scope of Work
    • Lead the development of a strategic grant making and accompaniment portfolio with a focus on AI technology and policy. Your portfolio will include a cohort of technical and policy focused fellows and awardees.
    • Be an active thought partner and advisor to fellows and awardees, enabling them to achieve all desired strategic outcomes of the fellowship/grant. Being able to effectively partner with them as a peer will be a key requirement of this role.
    • Nurture fellows’ and awardees’ bodies of work, helping them think of ways to sustain impact beyond their active fellowship/award and facilitating connections with relevant internal and external partners to support their success.
    • Build a cohort of fellows and awardees that are connected to each other, more broadly across the organization, and in Mozilla’s wider community. This includes managing recruitment and onboarding processes for fellows and awardees.
    • Contribute to the F&A team with fellows’ progress reporting and planning, including (1) creating and checking in on individual work plans, (2) communicating progress on work-plans to Mozilla and host organizations (where applicable), (3) completing progress reports as per agreed schedule, and (4) monitoring and evaluating progress against organizational vision.
  • Funder/Partners:
    • Manage relationships with current and potential donors and movement partners.
    • Knowledge sharing with funders (both existing and potential), with movement partners, and through external events.
  • Internal:
    • Work collaboratively with the Communications Officer to help Mozilla to position and tell the story of our investments in leaders broadly to funders, to the press, and to the public at large and track the impact of this coverage. This includes: through (a) community calls, (b) internal convenings (c) blogs and press articles.
    • Foster integration of the fellows into other initiatives at Mozilla, such as MozFest, Advocacy and the Internet Health Report by facilitating interactions with relevant internal partners.

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 10 years of relevant job experience with strong technical expertise.
  • Direct issue area expertise around technology, ranging from product management, digital rights, commitment to an open and healthy internet, and/or tech policy.
  • Curiosity for learning about areas of importance to Mozilla and our communities.
  • Multi-level partner management.
  • Someone who is a connector and a thinker.
  • Ability to interpret and assess nuance in a range of political environments and geographies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional, distributed teams.
  • Experience navigating across large organizations to build support for programs and initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Experience as a fellow, working with fellowship programs, or grant making preferred.
  • Experience of working across multiple countries is preferred.

Salary and Benefits Information:

The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary that takes into consideration the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We aim to offer at the midpoint of our salary ranges for the purposes of increasing inclusivity and fairness of our offer process, and ensuring internal equity. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.

The base salary ranges, along with mid-point, for this role in each of the key countries in which we employ staff is listed below. In these locations we target the 75th percentile of market pay as a salary band midpoint for all levels, with 10% either side of the midpoint to build a salary range. We also welcome applications outside of our key locations. We are reviewing our compensation in other locations and can provide more information about salary as part of the recruitment process.

  • Germany: €83,671 - €102,265 (mid-point: €92,968)
  • UK: £52,280 - £63,898 (mid-point: £58,089)
  • Canada: $94,779 - $115,841 (mid-point: $105,310)
  • US: $96,290 - $117,688 (mid-point: $106,989)

Depending on the successful candidate’s location, we may also add in a geographic differential to this base salary that accounts for local job market weighting. This differential is applied to the above ranges as per location. Below are some of the common cities in which we hire staff along with representative examples of salary ranges and mid-points, with the geographical differential applied:

  • Inner London: £56,985 - £69,649 (mid-point: £57,867)
  • Toronto: $102,267 - $124,992 (mid-point: $113,629)
  • New York: $106,689 - $130,398 (mid-point: $118,544)
