The Role
Job Summary & Responsibilities:
The Deputy Testing Director (full-time, salary, regular) is an expert in vehicle testing, digital publishing, and the automotive industry. The Deputy Testing Director will work with the Testing Director and Testing Department to collect and analyze data, develop new test procedures, and create insightful stories about automotive technology for MotorTrend and other MotorTrend Group brands. Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Brainstorm, write, and edit stories to fuel MotorTrend’s leadership in covering automotive technology
- Devise, execute, and write testing-centric feature stories covering topics such as electric vehicles, driver-assistance systems and autonomous vehicles, and software-defined vehicles
- Conduct vehicle testing using a VBox or other data-acquisition tools to quantify performance
- Write vehicle reviews, first tests, comparison tests, feature stories, and news content
- Review editorial and MotorTrend Studio content for factual and technical accuracy
- Collaborate with the Testing Director to maintain, optimize, and develop test procedures and data-collection methods
- Research and prepare vehicle specifications for editorial and video content
- Advise writers, editors, and the MotorTrend Studio team on technical topics
- Serve as on-camera talent for MotorTrend Studio editorial video productions
- Travel to vehicle debuts, new-car launches, auto shows, and other destinations for content creation purposes while representing the MotorTrend brand
Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position does not supervise any employees
Education/Experience:
- Preferred 5+ years of experience in automotive engineering or automotive publishing with a focus on technology and/or testing
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- The ability to write informative and entertaining stories on technical subjects for a nontechnical audience
- Deep knowledge of the automotive industry and automotive technology
- Must be able to operate both automatic- and manual-transmission vehicles with proficiency
- Must be able to operate high-performance vehicles safely and with high proficiency
- Familiarity with Racelogic Vbox or similar data-logging hardware and related software
- Excels when working under high-pressure situations
- Ability to multitask
- Excellent time-management skills
- Maintains a positive and professional attitude at all times
Physical Requirements:
- The ability to sit for a prolonged periods of time and view a computer screen
- Ability to travel frequently and stand on sets
- Ability to physically perform vehicle testing and any other car-related activity
Equipment:
- Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Racelogic VBox and other related vehicle-testing equipment
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment
- Vehicle testing will be performed in a variety of locations, including racetracks, automotive proving grounds, public roads, and outdoors in unpredictable weather
