Modern Animal is reimagining veterinary care and is looking for a Software Engineer that will build upon Modern Animal’s platform, with a focus on our back-end systems and infrastructure in order to expands the boundaries of what's possible in pet healthcare.
 
This role requires a blend of technical proficiency, architectural understanding, and problem-solving skills. We're looking for someone excited to take ownership of parts of our platform's architecture and guide our engineering team in tackling the challenges that come with scaling a platform in a startup environment.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement based in Los Angeles, CA. You'll have the flexibility to work remotely with occasional requirements to collaborate in-person at our office.
 
         What You'll Do:
  • Contribute to the Modern Animal platform, which includes React and React Native applications and Python Django services.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build scalable and robust systems.
  • Work closely with product managers and engineers to identify areas where technology can have an impact on the company’s goals and guide the team to deliver on these opportunities.
  • Actively contribute code and lead code reviews, setting a high bar for code quality and engineering best practices.
  • Bridge the gap between software engineering and systems architecture, leveraging your AWS knowledge to optimize our infrastructure.
  • Be a voice for technical rigor and engineering excellence.
  • Create wins that benefit our users.

    Why You'd be a Great Fit:
  • 7+ years of experience in software development, with some experience in leading systems architecture decisions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Deep hands-on experience with React, React Native, Python, Django, and other relevant languages and frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of system design and architecture, with the ability to design and implement scalable and maintainable systems.
  • Comfortable working with AWS services and optimizing cloud infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to lead technical projects, mentor other engineers, and drive engineering initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Enthusiastic about collaborating in team settings while also capable of working independently.

    Bonus points:
  • Experience with job queue libraries such as Celery to support efficient handling of asynchronous tasks and optimize system performance
  • Experience with utilizing generative AI
  • Experience with GraphQL, Apollo, and Strawberry for building efficient and flexible APIs
  • Familiarity with using Redis
  • An understanding of how to use message brokers like RabbitMQ

The pay range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and equity grant units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per the California Pay Transparency Act. Base pay information is based on geographic location.
