Major League Baseball, in partnership with the American Sports Medicine Institute (“ASMI”) located in Birmingham, Alabama, is presenting a two-day baseball medicine workshop on June 19-20, 2024, to assist underrepresented talent in sports medicine. The two days of educational coursework is to be foundational in nature for early career professionals and current students in athletic training, physical therapy, biomechanics, and performance science. Participants will be responsible for their own travel and lodging accommodations.
The baseball medicine workshop will take place at ASMI in Birmingham, Alabama, in the backdrop of the MLB at Rickwood game taking place between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants (6/20/24), honoring the legacy of the Negro Leagues. Registrants will attend the workshop, attend the MLB at Rickwood game, and visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (6/21/24). The Civil Rights Institute is part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding for the significance of civil rights developments in Birmingham.
Since 2016, the MLB Diversity Pipeline Program has assisted in over 600+ hires, working closely with the 30 MLB teams and the Office of the Commissioner to help guide and assist underrepresented talent (persons of color and women) interested in entering baseball front office and on-field careers within the game.
ASMI is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit sports medicine research and education foundation, founded in 1987 by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James R. Andrews. The mission of ASMI is to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education. ASMI features a state-of-the-art biomechanics laboratory, a skills lab for arthroscopic training and cadaveric research, and is the nation’s largest accredited educator of sports medicine physicians with graduates located in forty-four states, Puerto Rico, and six foreign countries.
