Mic is looking for a Deputy Politics Editor who can help shape coverage of our Navigating Trump’s America channel. The editor will work closely with our Editorial Director of Politics to assign and edit daily news, features and video scripts. We’re looking for an editor with institutional knowledge of politics, who can form and field smart pitches around breaking news and major political events, help our reporters define their beat coverage and enhance our work.
Monitor real-time news and social media conversations for political stories.
Work with a team of politics reporters, fielding pitches and refining story ideas for creative and unique angles.
Working closely with video leadership to coordinate in-house shoots and event-based coverage.
Work closely with channel editors to coordinate coverage of larger news events.
Note: Weekend work is possible, given the nature of the news cycle.
3-5 years of previous politics editing and reporting experience in a digital environment.
Ability to assign and edit stories with a clear and unique angle.
Voracious reader of politics coverage from diverse sources.
Mastery of social media, and understanding of the types of stories that perform well on various social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure.
Creative, independent thinker who understands what makes a Mic story.
