Meter provides internet infrastructure for businesses. We build enterprise-grade networks that are fast, secure, and reliable. Our full-stack approach combines software, operations, and hardware so that any company can easily set up and run a modern network. Our long-term ambition is to evolve internet infrastructure into a turnkey utility.

Meter’s mission is to make businesses more productive and secure by providing best-in-class internet infrastructure. The Device team supports this goal in a number of ways:

  • We provide the hardware platform that creates the physical foundation of Meter.
  • We provide the operating systems that power our hardware.
  • We write wireless firmware and drivers, and network subsystems.
  • We build systems to support large scale enterprise networks.

Fundamentally, the Device team provides the state-of-the-art foundation on which the rest of Meter’s product is built. We leverage existing Open Source Software whenever possible. Our users are both internal and external; in addition to our customers, we must consider the engineers who build on top of our platforms and our Operations team that installs, monitors, and uses our devices.

We are looking for leadership for our Devices team. In this role, you will be directly responsible for:

  • Developing a vision for the team on hardware, network, and wireless features.
  • Work on architecture for routing, switching, and security appliances.
  • Investigate new technology and platforms.
  • Performing code reviews.
  • Integrate customer and sales feedback into our roadmap.
  • Manage features and firmware releases.
  • Managing, mentoring, & building a team of Systems and Networking Engineers to execute on the goals outlined above.

Here are a few reasons why those goals are central to Meter’s business:

  • We want to release a product that helps customers have fast, reliable and secure networks.
  • We want to always make Operations quick and effective. By designing our devices to minimize their work, we can achieve this. We also provide tools to Operations for them to validate, program, and provision devices as necessary.
  • We want to make Customer Success’s lives easy. We do that by giving them devices that are rock-solid and just work. And when there’s a problem, we have best-in-class metrics and diagnostic tools so we can find and solve the problem quickly.

You might wonder why this role now? Here’s why:

  • As we look towards the next stage of Meter’s growth, we’ll need a leader for this team who can help us scale to meet the needs of our growing customer base using their experience and kindness to delight our customers.
  • We are expanding our device offerings and we need someone to drive the vision to help us release features and devices that help our customers.

In all candidates, we look for certain traits including kindness, ambition, optimism, effective communication (including written and verbal), and resilience. Beyond those, the ideal candidate for this role should have demonstrable strength and confidence in the following capabilities:

  • Technical breadth and depth: You have fluency in wireless, networks, operating systems, and embedded systems.
  • Systems thinking: Meter’s vertically integrated approach means that each decision that we make for our platform has direct consequences on how we deploy and manage our networks. We’re looking for individuals who seek to understand these dependencies and work functionally to bring everyone along.
  • People management skills: You know how to scale by hiring, mentoring, and managing a team and doing so in a way that is both kind and ambitious.
  • Setting priorities: You know how to set the right scope and priorities to solve the right problems for our customers.
