Position Location: Los Angeles, CA preferred, Remote possible

 Position Objective:

To oversee the financial management of Mercy For Animals’ global operations through localized partnerships with accounting firms and regional staff; serve as primary liaison and workflow manager between staff, auditors, and accountants in the U.S. and Canada; and support senior leadership in financial planning and analysis, financial strategy, financial reporting, and budgeting while maintaining and improving internal controls

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare budgets and forecasts, analyze financial performance, and monitor cash flow for a budget of up to $16 million (revenue streams include membership and foundation support and individual and corporate giving in six primary countries of operation)
  • Design, implement, and manage systems and procedures to support project planning, budgeting, and tracking to ensure reconciliation and compliance with financial policies
  • Support international staff and accounting firms with best practices, troubleshooting, and monthly reconciliation
  • Oversee U.S. and Canadian credit card accounts, manage transaction card flow, and reconcile accounts payable and receivable in partnership with MFA’s accounting firm
  • Prepare monthly global financial reports and provide updates on financial status to key leadership
  • Work with the people operations systems manager to process monthly payroll contributions and prepare annual financial payroll compliance testing for U.S. and Canada
  • Manage independent audit of financial statements; preparation of local, federal, and state or provincial tax returns; and compliance with local, federal, and state or provincial reporting obligations in U.S. and Canada
  • Maintain relationships with external auditors and international accounting firms, bankers, and legal counsel to determine best practices
  • Conceive of and implement continual improvement of financial management and reporting system to achieve peak operational efficiency, including but not limited to cash-flow modeling, evaluation of third-party vendors, negotiating fees, vetting and implementing new software solutions, and ongoing cost-saving analysis
  • Establish internal controls, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk and remain compliant with local, federal, and state or provincial laws and regulations
  • Provide best-practice guidelines with respect to organization-wide processes, including planning annual budgets, maintaining operational efficiencies, and managing the financial structure of international entities
  • Work with the fundraising team to manage revenue channels, including grants and all other donation types
  • Lead monthly meetings with department heads to discuss budget-to-actual comparisons and make adjustments
  • Prepare monthly reports with financial summary to senior leadership and quarterly performance reports for board of directors
  • Perform daily finance operations tasks that may include processing accounts receivable and accounts payable and gathering information to prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and inventory reports
  • Manage direct reports in daily finance operations
  • Work with financial advisor to make recommendations for investment accounts
  • Follow all human resources and administrative policies and procedures
  • Perform any other duties assigned by supervisor

Position Requirements:

  • CPA or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
  • Five to seven years’ professional experience
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets, QuickBooks, or other accounting software
  • Experience supporting international entities (preferred)
  • Proven track record of budgeting, forecasting, and project planning
  • Ability to problem solve effectively and meet deadlines
  • Work experience in nonprofit finance (preferred)
  • Regular domestic travel to meet with senior leadership
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization
