Position Location: Los Angeles, CA or Remote

Position Objective:

To oversee a global team of legal advocacy staff and collaboratively lead strategic legal advocacy efforts for Mercy For Animals in Brazil, Canada, India, Latin America, and the United States

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervise a global team of legal advocacy staff
  • Lead efforts to strategize, research, develop, and implement proactive legal initiatives that measurably reduce the suffering of farmed animals in line with our global strategy, in all countries where MFA is present
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization by drafting press releases and media statements, conducting press conferences, meeting with stakeholders in government, and participating in media interviews regarding any of the organization’s undertakings  
  • Drive coalition efforts to achieve legislative and regulatory changes
  • Communicate and meet with funders to secure support for legislative based initiatives
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with private pro bono counsel and attorneys in other animal protection organizations
  • Communicate and meet with members and supporters of the organization, as appropriate
  • Follow all human resource and operational procedures, and ensure that the legal advocacy team is in full compliance
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Position Requirements:

  • Five years of advocacy experience, including at least two years managing a team
  • Experience with drafting and driving legislative initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations, address and overcome problems, and negotiate with third parties
  • Proven exceptional organizational and writing skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a vegan lifestyle  
  • Commitment to the mission and objectives of the organization
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively on short notice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris doctor degree, or the equivalent degree in the applicant’s respective country, from an accredited law school
  • Experience advocating for administrative or regulatory reform
  • Fluency in Portuguese or Spanish
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights legal issues and MFA campaigns
