Position Location: Los Angeles, CA or Remote

Position Objective:

To oversee a global team of legal advocacy staff attorneys and managers, support the work of the investigations and corporate engagement departments, and collaboratively lead strategic legal advocacy efforts for Mercy For Animals in Brazil, Canada, India, Latin America, and the U.S.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervise a global team of legal advocacy staff attorneys and managers
  • Oversee all legal work pertaining to investigations, including research into state- and country-specific laws and regulations, legal risk analysis, legal petitions, requests for criminal prosecutions of animal abusers identified in investigative footage, and cooperation with law enforcement
  • Oversee all legal work with the corporate engagement department, including research and risk analysis, ensuring legal compliance of MFA’s corporate campaigns materials, and addressing any legal issues that arise from MFA’s work with food industry companies in the implementation of animal welfare policies
  • In collaboration with the legal advocacy team, strategize, research, develop, and implement proactive legal initiatives to advance the interests of farmed animals, including legislation, litigation, petitions for rulemaking, administrative comments, and complaints to state and federal agencies
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization by drafting press releases and media statements, conducting press conferences, and participating in media interviews regarding any of the organization’s undertakings
  • Coordinate with MFA’s general counsel on any legal issues that arise during the day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with private pro bono counsel and attorneys in other animal protection organizations
  • Communicate and meet with members and supporters of the organization, as appropriate
  • Follow all human resource and operational procedures and ensure that the legal advocacy team is in full compliance

Position Requirements:

  • Juris doctor degree, or the equivalent degree in the applicant’s respective country, from an accredited law school
  • Seven years of experience practicing law, including at least two years supervising other attorneys
  • Experience with legal risk analysis and assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations, address and overcome problems, and negotiate with third parties
  • Proven exceptional organizational and writing skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a vegan lifestyle
  • Commitment to the mission and objectives of the organization
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively on short notice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting legal research and risk analysis related to undercover investigations
  • Fluency in Portuguese or Spanish
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights legal issues and MFA campaigns
