Position Location: Los Angeles, CA or Remote

Position Objective: To ensure the legal compliance of Mercy For Animals and its international affiliates in all aspects of day-to-day operations, including but not limited to government compliance; corporate governance; and tax, intellectual property, privacy, human resources and employment, contract, and insurance law

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensure that each international entity is compliant with all government reporting requirements and all labor and employment laws and regulations
  • Oversee and manage all intellectual property issues
  • Manage the organization’s various insurance policies
  • Assist the Development Department with trusts, estates, and other planned giving matters
  • Oversee attorneys in their review of contracts, leases, and other legal documents
  • Draft contracts, releases, and other legal agreements as necessary
  • With the director of people operations and vice president of administration, maintain compliance with all corporate governance requirements and human resources and employment regulations, including but not limited to secretary of state and attorney general annual filings, sales tax remittance, unemployment fund contributions, IRS filings, board of director protocols, labor laws, and insurance matters
  • Ensure legal compliance of the various campaigns and other undertakings of the different departments and competently handle any other legal issues that may arise during the day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization by drafting press releases and media statements, conducting press conferences, and participating in media interviews regarding any of the organization’s undertakings
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with private pro bono counsel and attorneys in other animal protection organizations
  • Coordinate with MFA’s vice president of legal advocacy on any legal issues that arise during the day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Communicate and meet with members and supporters of the organization as appropriate
  • Follow all human resource and operational procedures and ensure legal department’s full compliance with these procedures
  • Supervise and manage all members of the legal department
  • Supervise legal interns

Position Requirements:

  • Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience practicing law
  • Minimum of two years’ experience with international law
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights legal issues and MFA campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations, address and overcome problems, and negotiate with third parties
  • Proven exceptional organizational and writing skills
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively on short notice
  • Professional appearance and adherence to a vegan lifestyle
