ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAM PROFILE
McKinsey.org is an independent non-profit founded by McKinsey & Company in January 2018 to have lasting and substantial impact on complex social challenges. Our first initiative, Rethinking Recycling, aims to dramatically improve recycling systems in cities around the world so that they are truly economically sustainable, socially inclusive, and environmentally beneficial – thus accelerating the transition to a zero-waste, circular economy. We focus particularly on plastics and organics (food and garden waste) in the post-consumer waste stream, which together drive much of the waste pollution crisis and its contribution to local pollution and global climate change.
As a member of our leadership team, the Director of Partnership will report directly to the CEO and initiate and nurture global partnerships with stakeholders to scale impact of our programs through strategic fundraising and the management of marketing and communication initiatives. Potential stakeholders will include, but are not limited to: funders, private sector companies, NGOs, and all levels of government (national, provincial, municipal, communities).
We are a young and rapidly growing nonprofit and the role will require a high degree of entrepreneurialism, a strong can-do mentality, a highly proactive approach and excellent coordination skills. Key responsibilities for the Director of Partnerships are outlined below:
- Build global funding partnerships to enable us to hit the revenue targets behind our ambitious goals. Including, but not limited to, supporting outreach to and partner development of private sector partners, Development Financial Institutions, national governments, NGOs, and other donors. These engagements will be developed through, among other avenues, relationship building, proposal writing, and grant and award applications.
- Build global strategic partnerships to accelerate our program delivery and impact. These partnerships include entities that add value across a number of dimensions such as brand and reputation, skill set/ knowledge (e.g., digital, media), and program expansion. Success will depend on the ability to connect and build trust with key stakeholders to create innovative partnerships that bring the capabilities and resources we need to advance our objectives.
- Support the deepening of local and regional programmatic partnerships. Including advising programs on how to manage and advance existing partnerships, and approach and create new ones.
- Develop a comprehensive global partnership strategy. Including, but not limited to, co-creating our value proposition to partners, identifying the different types and tiers of strategic partners (and associated targets), defining how to identify and assess potential partners, establishing deal flow management, and tracking a calendar of funding opportunities.
- Organize and maintain the tools and resources needed for partner engagement. Including the parameters of IP usage, impact sharing agreements, impact reporting protocols and templates, and relationship management best practices.
- Orchestrate the collaboration between stakeholders. Map the stakeholder ecosystem and surface opportunities for collaboration (beyond the adoption of Rethinking Recycling solutions) to achieve our strategic aspirations (increasing recycling yields, reducing waste diverted to landfills, transforming livelihoods and increasing the number of citizens that have access to recycling opportunities).
- Support building and strengthening our reputation. Help capture and share knowledge and innovations related to our programs, working together with the Director of Knowledge and the Manager of Communications. Identify key events and conferences and enable RR to present/participate at them.
- The Director of Partnerships will report to the CEO, while working closely with Regional Program Directors, Director of Knowledge, Manager of Communications, as well as the Partnership Leads in Indonesia and Argentina. The Manager of Communications will report to the Director of Partnerships.
- 10-15+ years’ experience of building unique and innovative partnerships between government, NGOs and companies and maintaining/ managing these partnerships. Experience attracting donor funding globally (including Europe and North America) and a proven track record in building trust-based relationships between public and private sector organizations.
- Strong personal reputation and deep network in the sustainability space, including existing relationships with donors/ funders and proven history of raising funds for international sustainability programs from a diversified funder base.
- Clear, articulate communicator able to “sell an idea” and easily see connections and opportunities to build networks and “win-win” collaboration opportunities.
- An inspirational team member, who fosters a non-hierarchical, high-performing and supportive culture, with experience coaching others to become effective leaders themselves.
- Strong track record of building respect and credibility with senior decision makers, such as government officials, corporate executives, major donors, and community leaders.
- Ability to thrive in “build the plane as you fly it” environments: comfortable managing the ambiguity and risks inherent to innovation; adapting to the situation at hand, helping teams prioritize dynamically based on new information; staying positive and creative in the face of setbacks and driving rapid progress.
- Ability to communicate complex information effectively to a highly diverse set of audiences – particularly context, main points to understand, implications for strategy/project delivery, asks and next steps.
- Experience working in one or more of the following areas:
- – A global NGO environment (i.e., priority to attract donor funding, dealing with sensitive stakeholder relations, fast evolving landscape).
- – Social impact and emerging economy contexts, especially building inclusive solutions in partnership with local stakeholders.
- – Sustainability topics (e.g., circular economy, corporate social responsibility, economic development) and/or related industries (e.g., fast-moving consumer goods, manufacturing, municipal services/utilities).
