Unlike small workshops or on-demand online classes, we integrate both live and asynchronous components to engage students without needing to scale up instructor time or support staff.

Right now, many experts and creators don't have the team, budget, or bandwidth to create a high quality cohort-based course. Inspired by the simplicity and power of tools like Shopify and Substack, we are building a platform that enables the best instructors around the world to build the most engaging and interactive courses.

Our small team has built and run world-class educational experiences at Udemy, AltMBA, Minerva, Google, General Assembly, Socratic, and Shopify. We're backed by incredible investors including Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, Naval Ravikant, and Arlan Hamilton. We've launched sold-out courses for incredible instructors like Li Jin, Anthony Pompliano, Lenny Rachitsky, Sahil Lavingia, and more.

The Role

Maven is a two-sided marketplace. On the one side, there are instructors who build cohort-based courses. On the other, there are students who come and take these courses. Your job is to grow the latter group. You will have access to the product team and the instructor team so you can leverage the product and instructors to help find opportunities for growth. Gagan was a growth advisor at Lyft, started the Growth Hackers Conference and led growth at Udemy. Between you and him, you’ll build a growth machine and figure out the secret sauce to growing Maven. Once the formula is clear, then we’ll build out a team. Here’s more about your responsibilities:

  • Work with product team to optimize the student-side funnel
  • Work with the instructor team to help engage our existing supply to increase sales; come up with experiments that various instructors will try and then test them out. Roll out anything that works to the wider group.
  • Build an internal experimentation and analytics framework to help us optimize our funnels and channels.
  • Run lots of tests, including paid marketing campaigns, referral programs for courses, e-mail marketing, partnerships and social marketing

This is the first growth role at the company and you’ll have a wide purview. You’ll also have to figure out what “growth” actually means since every company has a different growth strategy and we don’t know which will be most successful. The good news is we’re already growing at a significant clip (faster than Udemy did). The foundation is solid, but we will need to build upon it to succeed.

This role will report directly to Gagan Biyani, CEO of Maven.

Who's a Good Fit

You are familiar with at least 5+ growth channels and know how to figure out the rest. You are scrappy enough to do things on your own and senior enough to have the judgement to make good experiments. Eventually, you may run a team - but experience there isn’t required for this role.

We hire across a spectrum—we’re open to talented folks who are new in their career, and love more experienced people who can run teams and like doing the scrappy hands-on work before building a team. The role above will start as individual contributors. Based on your performance, you might build a team of direct reports. Since you’ll start as a one-person show, you should be excited to role up your sleeves to execute. Our business is evolving fast, so by the time you start the job, the role could have changed dramatically.
