Materialize is the streaming SQL database company that makes it easy for any developer or analyst to understand streaming data, answer complex questions and build intelligent applications using standard technology. Whether it’s delivering personalized experiences, accurately identifying fraud, building predictive AI, or discovering new business opportunities, the ability to run complex queries on multiple streams of data and keep their answers up to date is critical to making better decisions about the changing world around us.
We are focused on bottom-up developer adoption, our core software is free to use and source available, our business model is a cloud product that handles management of Materialize and lets businesses focus on building value. We have a vibrant developer community on Slack and as much as possible we work in public on GitHub.
Who We Are:
The Materialize team includes engineers who were early employees of Cockroach Labs, Flink, Dropbox, and YouTube. Our work builds on top of Timely Dataflow and Differential Dataflow, both created by our co-founder Frank McSherry, a world-leading computer scientist with decades of award-winning research in all aspects of data.
Kleiner Perkins, Redpoint Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Additional investors include executives from Cockroach Labs, Datadog, and Rubrik.

Materialize is hiring someone to help own all aspects of business and GTM operations and strategy. You will work closely with every department and the CEO to push through operations priorities. You will have significant responsibility in a fast growing organization. We sponsor visas for US work authorization. We are open to hiring externs for this role.

What you will have

Strongly Preferred: at least 1-2 years in management, strategy, or economic consulting, or 1-2 years at an investment bank. 2-5 years of overall work experience.

Fluency with complex Excel spreadsheets.

A laser-sharp attention to detail, and a commitment to operational excellence. A strong work ethic. There is no silver bullet, but instead a large quantity of lead bullets. You will be ruthlessly efficient.

An ability to write clearly, at length. Materialize runs on written memos, and you will help write and edit them.

Experience with SQL or financial modeling and accounting is a plus but not required. You can learn these skills on the job.

What you don't need

You do not need an MBA. If you are considering applying to an MBA in order to effect a career switch into tech, apply for this job instead.

You do not need any work experience in tech, startups, or engineering.

You do not need any specific degree, or familiarity with technology. Having studied continental philosophy or government is fine (and perhaps is even an advantage, if it has taught you to write clearly). We're a team of world-class technologists and can teach you everything you need to know about computers, as long as you're willing to put in the work.

What you will do

You will be working closely with all departments to make sure we have the data and processes required for a strong "go-to-market" engine.

You will help clear through legal filings related to financing, governance, foreign entity creation, tax and employment regulation.

You will partner with engineering to maintain and improve security and compliance certifications.

You will help the finance team with preparing backward and forward looking financial statements.

You will construct great sales/pitch decks.

You will own the optimization of every aspect of the company from the office AV systems to our customer support systems.

You will spend time fiddling with three cells in a complex spreadsheet to get more intuition for the levers of a business, and the sensitivities of the outputs to the inputs.

You will have access to a variety of confidential information, and keep them confidential including our financials and our dept-by-dept compensation strategies. These sets of data can be better optimized, and you will help optimize them.

You will do a lot of reading, including industry-specific and general tech books, regulatory filings, papers, and blog-posts.

You will gain an education in all foundational aspects of building a GTM engine in SaaS infrastructure.

You will have exposure to all parts of the business including exposure to the co-founder and CEO.

We understand it takes a diverse team of highly intelligent, passionate, curious, and creative people to develop the exceptional product we are building. Our dynamic team has incredible perspectives to share, just as we know you do, and we take great pride in being an equal opportunity employer.
