At Markforged we have a saying - “the product is the part.” We strive to achieve first class print quality with engineering-grade materials at the push of a button. Materials print engineering is a central function that integrates new materials seamlessly into our print systems, and further improves the print quality of our existing ones. Our printers are complex systems that reflect a convergence of engineering knowledge in hardware, software, and material science. Material print engineers have deep understandings on fused filament fabrication (FFF) printing processes, and are also systems thinkers and problem solvers that utilize multidisciplinary engineering skills to integrate and optimize the print system together.
We are looking for a player/coach to mentor and manage a team of print engineers. Your team will be the go-to source for successfully printing materials (e.g. thermoplastic filaments and continuous fibers) on FFF printers. You will be integral in achieving the best-in-class print quality that Markforged is known for. You will be required to build strong cross-disciplinary competencies and relationships to successfully bring new filaments to market. You and your team will cover multidisciplinary engineering topics as you tune the printers and materials together - modifying software print settings, quantifying “good”, guiding algorithm development, refining material selection and formulation, and informing hardware improvements. You must question assumptions and continuously improve on best-in-class printing. Passion and collaboration will be essential for success. Expectation is that the role is 60% management, and 40% individual contribution.
What you will own:
- Manage and mentor a cross disciplinary team of 3-5 print engineers who are responsible for both new material introductions and continuous improvement efforts in our print systems.
- Become an expert in Markforged FFF printing systems and how materials interact with them.
- Continuously grow understandings of the relationship between material printing processes and end-part qualities, and in doing so build a print tuning center of excellence within Markforged.
- Drive the continuous development of metrics and methods to evaluate print qualities and end-part performance.
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to build functional requirements, perform root cause analysis, solve problems, develop new features, and identify areas for improvement relating to material print quality.
- The role will initially focus on our plastic and composite printers, but can grow to include our metal printers as well.
Important Note:
Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, but are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply!
What you have:
- Bachelors in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related engineering discipline
- 5+ years of experience related to system development, optimization or integration, preferably involving processing of materials
- 2+ years of experience leading a fast-paced, dynamic and interdisciplinary team
- Extensive hands-on experience in developing test methods and tools, and implementing them for system diagnostics, troubleshooting, and improvement
- Experience in the selection and performance characterization of typical engineering materials in customer facing goods
- Strong capability on design of experiments, and data-driven decision making
- Passion for developing others
- Excellent cross-function communication and organizational skills
- Basic skills in programming and CAD
